In order to inform possible investments to improve urban primary health care services, medical-appointment-doctor-healthcare-clinic-health-hospital-medicine[7]the World Bank is seeking to hire a firm to undertake a detailed assessment of outpatient delivery capacity of government health facilities in Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chattogram City Corporation areas.

The assessment will be conducted with the overall aim of understanding better the existing public sector primary and out-patient healthcare services in urban areas in terms of available inputs and resource usage. The assessment will be completed in all government health facilities that provide out-patient and primary health care services in Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chattogram City Corporation areas.

Tasks are expected to include:
– Country-wide, high-level assessment of direct use potential
– Preparation of pre-feasibility studies for selected applications
– Assessment of interest of municipalities and private developers
– Estimation of investment needs to allow the market to grow to its potential
– Barrier assessment
– Preparation of action plan/roadmap for the promotion of direct uses of geothermal resources

The objective of this assignment is to support the Government of DRC in attracting the private sector for the electrification of provincial capitals. To this end, the consultant will review the legal/regulatory/PPP framework and tools, use the results of a technical prefeasibility study to develop financial models for 2 to 4 provinces, consult local/regional/international private operators/utilities, develop appropriate PPP contract samples, assist the government over the procurement process, and develop a comprehensive capacity strengthening plan for 2 to 4 provincial governments and the regulator.

It is undeniable that progress has been made in reducing extreme poverty over the last ht-jessica-education780pxquarter century—from 36 percent of the world population in 1990 to an estimated 8.6 percent in 2018—and that living standards for hundreds of millions of people have improved over that time.

Yet, poverty reduction has not been consistent across countries and today it is slowing. For the world’s poorest countries, extreme poverty remains stubbornly high with 31 percent of their people living on less than $1.90 a day.

eC2: Enabling Private Sector Participation in Electricity Distribution

U.S. Electricity Output Rose 6.2% From A Year Earlier

Policy makers acknowledge the role of private sector in distribution but would want to understand business models that may be suitable considering the local context of states in India. Till date only two cases of private sector participation in the Indian electricity distribution (under Licensee mode) have been tried in the states of Delhi and Odisha with mixed results. Beyond these two examples, other models of private sector participation (PSP) such as distribution franchises are also prevalent in the country and have met with mixed results. Further, Govt. of India in the past had also drafted an amendment bill to Electricity Act for introducing carriage and content separation, which may be another approach to encourage competition in the electricity distribution sector.

Money sent home by workers now largest source of external financing in low- and middle-income countries (excluding China)

The money workers send home to their families from abroad has become a critical part of many economies around the world. Based on the most recent data, remittances, as this money is called, will only grow in importance. Officially recorded remittances amounted to a record $529 billion in 2018, and are on track to reach $550 billion in 2019.

This money is flowing at about the same levels as foreign direct investment (FDI), but if China is excluded, they are the largest source of foreign exchange earnings in low- and middle-income countries, according to Migration and Remittances Brief 31, published by the World Bank Group and KNOMAD, the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development. In other words, if China is excluded from the analysis, remittances have already overtaken FDI as the biggest source of external financing.

World Refugee Day 2019: Building a stronger international response to the challenge of forced displacement

This year, World Refugee Day finds me in Addis Ababa with representatives from more ethiopia-for-blogthan 50 governments to review the work of the International Development Association (IDA), the arm of the World Bank Group that provides financing to the poorest countries, and discuss priorities for the years ahead. Under its current program, IDA is providing $2 billion to 14 low-income countries which together are hosting 6.4 million refugees, including in Ethiopia. 

Ethiopia is among the countries that is taking major steps forward. Here, for example, we have supported the government in adopting a new legal framework for refugees which will allow them to gradually move out of camps, find jobs, and access education and health services. This is no small measure for the more than 900,000 refugees who are hosted along Ethiopia’s borders with Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, and South Sudan. It is the difference between having a chance to restart their lives or be condemned to dependency and destitution.
