Building Resilient Health Systems in the Shadow of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed structural weaknesses in health systems worldwide and 720 x 720.jpgnegatively impacted individuals, societies, and economies. In the pandemic’s wake, political leaders and everyday people alike recognize the importance of resilient health systems that can prevent, prepare for, respond to, and learn from infectious outbreaks and other shocks while continuing to deliver quality essential health services. But urgent questions remain. Which features of a health system are most important for achieving resilience? How can countries—especially poor ones—build resilient health systems? Which investments should countries prioritize to make their systems resilient to future challenges?

This new World Bank report, “Change Cannot Wait: Building Resilient Health Systems in the Shadow of COVID-19,” builds on previous work, leverages new research, and considers countries’ frontline experiences during the pandemic. It presents a new framework for making health systems resilient, shows how countries can build them, and where countries and partners can target investments to improve health outcomes.

 

Europe and Central Asia: Health Systems, Safety Nets, and Support to Businesses All Critical to Protecting Lives and Livelihoods

WASHINGTON, 8 April 2020 – Decisive policy measures that prioritize investments in medical-appointment-doctor-healthcare-clinic-health-hospital-medicine[7]health care systems and provide safety nets for people, especially the most vulnerable, are critical to mitigating the impacts of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic in Europe and Central Asia, says the Spring 2020 Economic Update for the region.

In addition, countries in the region can help sustain economic activity by supporting the private sector with temporary business credits, tax cuts, or tax payment deferrals. Small and medium enterprises that are impacted could benefit significantly from targeted government subsidies.

eC2: Assessment of Public Sector Primary and Out-Patient Health Service Delivery Capacity in Dhaka

In order to inform possible investments to improve urban primary health care services, medical-appointment-doctor-healthcare-clinic-health-hospital-medicine[7]the World Bank is seeking to hire a firm to undertake a detailed assessment of outpatient delivery capacity of government health facilities in Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chattogram City Corporation areas.

The assessment will be conducted with the overall aim of understanding better the existing public sector primary and out-patient healthcare services in urban areas in terms of available inputs and resource usage. The assessment will be completed in all government health facilities that provide out-patient and primary health care services in Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chattogram City Corporation areas.

The MDTF is Bank-executed and provides effective and timely TA to develop capacity for efficient implementation of RMNCAH initiatives focusing on improving utilization and quality of essential RMNCAH services. This firm consultancy therefore aims to support selected counties to build/strengthen HPT supply chain systems into efficient, effective, responsive and sustainable systems with emphasis on the 13 lifesaving RMNCAH commodities according to the UN Commission for life saving Commodities through provision of technical assistance.

The initial scope and purpose of the multi-stakeholder platform for knowledge sharing medical-appointment-doctor-healthcare-clinic-health-hospital-medicine[7]on access solutions for innovative medicines (henceforth, the Platform) will be to develop and share knowledge and tools for smarter decision making on access strategies for patented medicines for NCDs, through a collaborative approach. The Platform will leverage the pharmaceutical industry’s capacity for developing innovative access solutions and the World Banks role as a strategic long term partner for developing countries and its convening power, to create a reference policy and implementation framework and decision-making tools for maximizing reach of new treatments for populations that typically would not have access to patented medicines, ultimately driving uptake of voluntary access strategies in developing countries.
