eC2:Photovoltaic Water Pumping Project

The project seeks to facilitate the gradual retrofitting/replacement of existing diesel generators for water pumping with solar power. The financing mechanism will consist of a blended financing approach where 50% of the investment in PVP by Community Owned Water Supply Organizations (COWSOs) will be covered by a grant and the remaining 50% covered through a loan from TIB Development Bank. COWSOs will repay the loan through monthly installments via a mobile money payment modality. COWSOs are generally unfamiliar with PVP technology and are not accustomed to receiving and servicing loans. For the Project to succeed, careful COWSO sensitization, training and follow-up is required.

eC2: PPP Viability Studies for Municipal Projects in Tanzania

The World Bank is assisting Local Government Authorities in Tanzania to implement a PPPsnumber of investments through PPP, in particular those projects that would not require any public funding (aside from land contributions) and might generate new sources of revenues for the LGAs.

As part of the project preparation, the Word Bank is seeking a firm to undertake studies that will assess the viability of the projects in light of the economic, legal, financial, market, socio/environmental, affordability and value for money factors. The studies will allow the LGAs to determine the projects viability, whether they should pursue a PPP solution for the selected facilities, and what form of PPP should be developed. The Local Government Authorities will be the Contracting Authority (CA) for the PPP projects.

Taking Disaster Risk Management to New Heights

  • As urbanization rates skyrocket worldwide, cities large and small are grappling with increased disaster risk as infrastructure buckles underneath the weight of rapidly growing populations.
  • In flood-prone Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, public safety officials are working to better protect residents from recurrent flooding, which disproportionately impacts the city’s many makazi holela – unmapped, resource-poor informal settlements.
  • GFDRR is supporting Dar es Salaam’s efforts to secure vulnerable neighborhoods through the Ramani Huria initiative, a community-mapping project that trains university students and local community members on platforms that create open-source maps of the most flood-prone areas of their city. Using novel technologies, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), commonly known as drones, volunteers better understand vulnerabilities in their community, and put crucial information in the hands of those who need it most.

eC2: Lighting Africa – Market Research on Off-grid Lighting in Tanzania

Lighting Africa is a joint World Bank/IFC program launched in 2007 to accelerate the solar-energydevelopment of markets for modern off grid lighting and energy products in Africa where majority of the population use expensive, hazardous and low quality fuel- based lighting products. The program was piloted in Kenya and Ghana but has now been replicated in 10 countries across Africa (including Tanzania) and Asia.

Tanzania has continued to face grid expansion challenges with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals estimating 40% of the countries total population and only 10% of rural households have access to electricity.

The program is seeking a market research firm to assess the development of the solar off-grid lighting market in Tanzania covering but not limited to: the supply chain (retailers) carrying the products; their penetration in the rural market; estimated market share of quality verified products; an overview of the after sales service structure; and innovative business models e.g. Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGo) etc. that are in the market.

The goals of the ELP Systems Research program are (1) to provide policymakers in a set of focus countries with actionable information to help guide the delivery of quality, equitable early learning at scale; and (2) to build the international evidence base in the emerging field of systems research in early childhood education. Funding is available for one research team for each of the following focus countries/regions: Ethiopia; Liberia; the province of Punjab, Pakistan; and Tanzania. An additional focus country may be added at a later time depending on the availability of funds.

IFC Launches Web Portal to Boost Off-Grid Access, Renewable Energy Production in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, August 11, 2016 — IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, today announced the launch of a web portal to speed the development of mini-grids in Tanzania, helping the country boost its energy production and increase access to electricity through renewable sources such as solar and hydro.  

The portal, found at http://www.minigrids.go.tz/, provides licensing, financing, regulatory, and other information and support to small, renewable power producers in Tanzania who want to sell electricity to consumers, especially to the millions in the country not connected to the main grid.

Two eC2 Tenders: Lighting Africa: Consumer Education Below/Above the Line in Tanzania

Lighting Africa, a joint World Bank/IFC program aims at helping address the lighting light-bulb-297489_640needs of consumers who rely predominantly on fuel-based kerosene lamps and candles by enabling them gain access to non-fossil fuel-based, low-cost, high-quality, safe, and reliable lighting products.

The Lighting Africa, Tanzania program has identified consumer education as a critical component in developing the market for off-grid lighting products in Tanzania. The consumer education initiatives will include an above-the-line campaign through a broad range of marketing and public awareness activities including TV, radio, print media, out-of-home, social media and mobile advertising etc designed to reach consumers and create behavioral change.

The consumer education initiatives will also include below-the-line consumer engagements such as consumer activations, stakeholder events, roadshows, direct marketing, and digital activation activities etc designed to reach consumers and create behavioral change.
