Endline Survey for the Impact Evaluation of Overcoming Barriers to Adoption of Sanitation for the Poor Households in the Philippines

Objective: The endline survey will be implemented in approximately 15 pre-selected households per barangay (village) across 272 barangays (total of 4,080 households) to collect post-intervention data from 17 selected municipalities in the 5 provinces of Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bohol (Region 7), Leyte and Eastern Samar (Region 8). The endline survey will focus on collecting basic information from households in order to test for balance between treatment and control groups and to understand financial behaviors and practices of participating households. Anticipated modules include: (i) household roster and demographics; (ii) assets, income and labor force participation; (iii) dwelling characteristics; (iv) water sources and drinking water; (v) latrine and sanitation facilities; (vi) program exposure and knowledge of sanitation practices; (vii) credit and savings; (viii) access to finance; (ix) children (under 5) health section and (x) risk aversion behavior. Other key stakeholders of the project will also be interviewed. This includes the participating local government units, regional DSWD staff, and partner MFI and masons.

Mangroves are weeds; if you give them half a chance they grow in some of the most port_barton_palawan2inhospitable environments; with their knees in seawater and their trunks in the air. They create forested barriers between the wrath of the seas and our coastal communities providing benefits in coastal defense and fisheries. Unfortunately there are too many examples where we have not given mangroves half a chance; hundreds of thousands of hectares have been lost to pollution, aquaculture and other developments. These represent real losses to the coastal communities – often some of the most vulnerable communities living in the highest risk areas.

Innovative Insurance Program to Boost Natural Disaster Risk Management

WASHINGTON DC, August 15, 2017—A new catastrophe risk insurance program to helpvn-communitybased-disasterrisk-780x439 the Philippines better respond to losses from climate and disaster risks was launched by the Government of the Philippines, supported by the World Bank (IBRD, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) and the U.K. Department for International Development.

The program provides the Philippine peso equivalent of US$206 million in coverage against losses from major typhoons and earthquakes to national government assets, and to 25 participating provinces against losses from major typhoons. Insurance payouts are made when pre-defined parametric triggers are met.

Deltares and the World Bank: examples of close collaboration in the Philippines

Through many collaborative missions, seminars and projects Deltares shares its breakthroughs on Flood Risk Management, Environment, Water and Subsoil Resources, Delta Infrastructure, Adaptive Delta Planning and advanced Software Products with the World Bank.

Through the Water Partnership Program (WPP, a joint partnership between the World Bank and the Governments of the Netherlands) Deltares has supported the World Bank in the Philippines by providing technical assistance on dredging operations in river basins, developing advanced flood inundation models (using Lidar datasets) meanwhile capacitating local engineers in advanced modeling techniques. Another project included a coastal engineering study to prevent flooding in Manila and carrying out detailed assessments on upgrading of pumping stations in Manila.

The purpose of the study is to assess the Hospitalnature of private health markets and identify private sector players and opportunities in Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines. In addition to a detailed analysis of private health markets, the study also includes a mapping of the main private sector players, including hospitals, diagnostics, primary care providers, medical technology and equipment, pharmaceuticals and long-term elderly care.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the IFC have recently established a research platform to support private sector analysis in developing economies in East Asia and the Pacific. DFAT and IFC recognize the need to better understand the role of the private health markets in East Asia and to identify opportunities to support private sector projects that deliver developmental impact and reach low-income segments.
