New World Bank Fund to Support Climate-Smart Mining for Energy Transition

The World Bank launched the Climate-Smart Mining Facility on May 1st, the first-ever fund dedicated to making mining for minerals climate-smart and sustainable. The Facility will support the sustainable extraction and processing of minerals and metals used in clean energy technologies, such as wind, solar power, and batteries for energy storage and electric vehicles. It focuses on helping resource-rich developing countries benefit from the increasing demand for minerals and metals, while ensuring the mining sector is managed in a way that minimizes the environmental and climate footprint.

U.S. Electricity Output Rose 6.2% From A Year Earlier

The International Finance Corporation (IFC part of the World Bank Group) is in preliminary discussions with the Government of Northern Macedonia, assess the bankability and support the development of a greenfield pumped-storage hydropower plant.  Within the context of this potential engagement, IFC expects the need to perform a least-cost electricity generation and storage assessment of Northern Macedonia and neighboring countries, and economic analysis of the proposed project, and is seeking expressions of interest from experienced technical consultants (or consortia of consultants) with experience in electricity market design / assessment and renewable power generation.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has been mandated by the Federal Government of Brazil (GoB), through CAIXA, its state-owned development bank (the Client) to provide lead transaction advice on the development and implementation of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP or the Project) to improve the delivery of public lighting for up to 6 Municipalities (Municipalities). IFC is now looking to hire a consultant (Consultant) to work throughout the development of the transaction with expertise in: (i) Project Management Office; (ii) Technical Street Lighting, including Artistic and Special Areas Lighting; and (iii) Economic-Financial modeling.

eC2: Small Hydropower Mapping in Myanmar

Myanmar is in a substantial need for new power generation capacities. The country has the lowest grid connected electrification rate in Southeast Asia, with only 42% of the population supplied. It is estimated that at least 500 MW of additional generation capacity is required to come on line annually up to 2030 to meet the growing domestic demand. Although the country has abundant freshwater resources, the hydropower sector has experienced relatively limited development compared to the identified potential total capacity. To date, no reliable information on Myanmar’s available small- and medium-size HPP potential is available, neither a comprehensive database on planned, under development and commissioned plants of these capacities exist. Therefore, in order to assess the options for development of greenfield small- and medium-size hydropower plants in Myanmar, IFC intends to collect information, prepare a database and map all HPPs in the country with the capacity between 2-30 MW.

eC2: ESMAP external evaluation

The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) is a donor-funded global knowledge and technical assistance program, administered by the World Bank. ESMAP provides analytical and advisory services to low- and middle-income countries to increase their know-how and institutional capacity to achieve environmentally sustainable energy solutions for poverty reduction and economic growth. ESMAP is commissioning an external evaluation of its program. The objective of the evaluation is to draw lessons from the operational processes and implementation of the FY17-20 Business Plan, including the achievement of the intended results and the efficiency of operational processes, and use the conclusions and recommendations for reflection, learning and strategic adaptation of the program for the next business plan. The ESMAP Program Secretariat and the Consultative Group will be the primary users of the evaluation.

eC2: Technical advisor for renewable energy PPP options in small and mini grids in Haiti

The PPIAF-financed activity provides technical assistance and capacity building to the Government to successfully implement these priority actions. In this context, the World Bank is seeking a Technical Advisor to support Government in strategic and operational decisions related to the scale up of distributed renewable energy in Haiti, in particular through developing public-private partnerships (PPP) options for retrofitting of existing utility/municipal mini grids, and building incentives for investments in new mini grids. This will be done through the provision of capacity building, facilitation of lessons learned from similar country contexts and other similar technical advice.

Across India, Solar Power Brings More than Light

DULU SARNA, India—Sarita Asur, a subsistence farmer and young mother of three, lives maxresdefault in one of India’s most remote tribal areas—a place so isolated that it’s not just off the power grid, it’s also absent from most maps. She and her community, the Asur tribe, are based in the eastern state of Jharkhand.  Nearly half of the people in this isolated territory lack access to electricity—the highest percentage of any state in India.

So when Azure Power, a private solar provider and longstanding IFC client, won a contract to bring power to 320 households in 11 mud-brick villages scattered across the state, the first item of business was to locate these communities. Engineers spent a week driving and trekking through waterlogged jungle to identify the coordinates of each village—including Sarita Asur’s. Next, Azure Power arranged to transport the equipment (including 450-pound batteries) on the narrow, unpaved roads of one of India’s poorest regions. Continue reading →
