eC2: Enabling Environment and Development of PPP Framework in Urban Sanitation

The Water supply and sanitation subsector is among the focus areas that the Federal untitledDemocratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) has considered among the pro poor sectors. With this understanding the World Bank is extending its support through different interventions. The World Bank Group is supporting the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to achieve its national targets set under GTP II through availing resources to different sectors and sub sectors.
One of the major interventions of the World Bank is the support extended to improve the services delivery in Addis Ababa and 22 secondary towns under the Second Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project (SUWSSP). Implementation of the project is an opportunity to improve sanitation services delivery and water supply in Addis Ababa and in the secondary and regional towns. This project is a logical continuation of the Ethiopian Urban Water Supply and Sanitation project which was closed in December 2017. Unlike the prior projects the SUWSSP has a wider perspective of reaching different segment of the community by adopting City Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approach. The model provides opportunity to start with understanding the context, planning for cost effective solution, and consultation with end users. Except Addis Ababa, all project beneficiary towns had limited experience of delivering sanitation focused project and their current staffing for sanitation is also limited.
The SUWSSP has three major components (i) Addis Ababa sanitation and operational efficiency improvement, (ii) Secondary cities and towns sanitation, water supply, and operational efficiency improvement, and (iii) Program management (Federal and regional level). The first two components further divided into three sub-components focusing on sanitation services improvement, water utilities performance improvement and utility modernization and institutional capacity strengthening.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) seeks to accelerate the development of Kenyan MSME road contractors to enable them to submit more qualified bids and win more contracts in public sector road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance. The Kenya SME Road Contractors project would like to scale up the business skills of MSMEs engaged in road construction activities, with the aim of increasing their opportunities in the sector.

The overall objective of the assignment is the delivery of a business management training Program which will target Kenyan road contractors registered with Kenya National Construction Authority (NCA) in the categories NCA3 NCA6 to enhance their business management skills and capabilities to strengthen the efficiency of their business operations. This will include training on practical bidding skills and project management.

Survey Firm for Agriculture Household Listing, Plot Mapping and Baseline Data Collection Sustainable Land and Water Resource Management Project (SLWMRP) Mozambique.

The Mozambique Sustainable Land and Water Resource Management Project (SLWRMP), financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), aims to increase the resilience of communities towards the adverse impacts of climate change through the development of 56 small scale irrigation kits, covering either 5 or 10 ha, in the Southern province of Gaza. The Gaza province is one of the most adversely affected provinces in terms of climate change events with frequent occurrence of droughts in the northern parts and floods in the coastal areas of the province. The Project is being implemented in the four districts of Guija, Mabalane, Chicualacuala and Massengena. The data collection activities will feed into the rigorous evaluation of the project.

The Missing Piece: Disability-Inclusive Education

down-syndrome-boy-with-phoneIn 2015, the world committed to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” More than an inspirational target, SDG4 is integral to the well-being of our societies and economies – to the quality of life of all individuals.

Today, 65 million primary school-age children are not in school – close to half of them are children with disabilities. Even children with disabilities who do enroll are far less likely to complete school than others. Some estimates suggest that less than 5% of children with disabilities will graduate. This has led to a world where only 3% of adults with disabilities are literate – with, shockingly, only 1% of women with disabilities being literate.

eC2: Energy Access Household Survey in Madagascar

The World Bank-ESMAP team is launching the first Global Energy Access Household Surveys to set a baseline to track progress towards Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) goal and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 7 on access to affordable, reliable and sustainable modern energy by 2030. A reputed local firm with extensive experience in household surveys is sought to conduct the baseline survey on energy access using the multi-tier framework approach to track progress towards SDG7 . The survey will be nationally representative and administered to both urban and rural localities. The firm will work with the World Bank-ESMAP to pre-test, finalize and implement the survey. Data collection should be carefully monitored to ensure high quality information.

eC2: Digital Skills for Ghana

Develop a publication targeting CEOs of African tertiary education institutions, Executives in the Technology and other relevant sectors and African policy makers. The effort will have a specific focus on Ghana. The objective of the publication is to showcase best-in-class private sector-led practices promoting Digital Skills, advancing the understanding of what are the relevant digital skills that need to be promoted, and how to best integrate the delivery of digital skills into the curriculum through specific, innovative offerings. The focus will be on skills needed at the post-secondary level, including upskilling / reskilling needs for working adults, with an emphasis on lifelong learning. The digital economy in Ghana, and more broadly across Africa, needs a digitally skilled workforce that masters basic functional digital skills at minimum with some acquiring high level skills like coding and software development capabilities.

eC2: Analysis of Ethiopias Human Development (education and health) and safety net delivery systems in the lowlands

There exist horizontal (inter-regional, intra-regional and inter-woreda) and vertical (income distribution) disparities in human development outcomes. Ethiopia is impacted by droughts which have the potential to undermine the development gains the country has made if not anticipated and responded to. Furthermore, Ethiopia is deeply affected by forced displacement and the country is hosting the second-largest refugee population in Africa with most refugees hosted along Ethiopia’s borders with the majority of the refugee camps situated in the lowlands where the implications of long-term refugee hosting have been felt most acutely. The increasing number and extent of droughts, coupled with the remaining challenges to ensure access to services for the most vulnerable, highlights the need to examine Ethiopia’s service delivery modalities and financing systems with a view to plan and prepare for chronic crisis adapting delivery to maximize investments in human development and to improve systems to respond to crises and ensure hard won development gains are not lost.

eC2: Mapping and prioritization of hydropower resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The objective of this activity is to inform the Government of DRC (GoDRC)s plan to develop its vast and untapped hydropower resources. The activity will (i) assess and map geospatially DRCs hydropower resources; (ii) rank small, medium, and large green field hydropower sites based on technical and economic considerations; (iii) provide narrowed/priority lists of sites by category, with a focus on mid-size sites (10 100 MW), and based on multi-criteria analysis jointly identified with the Government and the World Bank; (iv) provide in-country advice and training to enable stakeholders to participate in the production, maintenance and future enrichment of the database and related information created and (v) offer practical advice for implementation of priority site development. The priority lists and implementation advice will form practical guidance based on which the GoDRC will launch prefeasibility or feasibility studies of selected medium size hydropower sites funded separately under IDA resources.
