Innovative Procurement Practices Help Dairy Sector in India

milk_collection_640India is the world’s largest producer as well as consumer of milk and milk products. India nevertheless faces a shortage of milk and milk products due to increasing demand from the fast growing middle class in the country.

The National Dairy Plan Phase I (NDP-I), a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, which is supported by National Dairy Support Project (NDSP), aim to increase milk productivity and market access for milk producers, which are both necessary to meet the growing demand for milk. NDP-I is being implemented with a total investment of about US$350 Million, out of which the Bank has extended a Credit of US$219 Million through the NDSP.

WBG News: Vietnam’s Climate Change and Green Growth Agenda Receives $90 million Boost

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 24, 2016 – The World Bank will help Vietnam strengthen its _DSC8598climate change and green growth agenda with a US$90 million credit for policy reforms aligned with the World Bank Group’s Climate Change Action Plan.

The Climate Change and Green Growth Development Policy Financing, approved today, along with the recently approved Mekong Delta Integrated Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Project, marks a new phase in World Bank support as Vietnam continues to focus on inclusive green growth while addressing key climate change vulnerabilities.

World Bank: Climate Change Poses Urgent Threat to Poor of Coastal Bangladesh

  • Nearly 12 million people live in poverty in the coastal region of Bangladesh.
  • Poor households in coastal Bangladesh will confront increasingly severe challenges from climate change through heightened cyclonic inundation, rising river salinity, and increased soil salinity.
  • The World Bank is working with the Government of Bangladesh to enable poor households to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Nearly 12 million people live in poverty in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The climate already poses a challenge to the lives and livelihoods of these households, seen vividly in the damage caused by Cyclone Roanu a few weeks ago. New projections published by the World Bank suggest climate change will pose an even more severe challenge over the next three decades.

The Government of South Africa seeks an analysis of the options for increasing scaling+solar+main+bannerBroad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Shareholder participation in the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program (REIPPP) including by improving the accessibility and terms of financing for B-BBEE equity and increasing the ability of B-BBEE shareholders to realize the benefit of their investment. This should include an assessment of the enabling conditions for primary market participation and also the constraints affecting the sale of B-BBEE shareholdings in REIPP projects. The same analysis could also be applied to other (non-renewable) projects procured under the Independent Power Producers Programme of the Department of Energy to the extent the B-BBEE position is similar.

News: World Bank Increases Support for Health Sector in Bangladesh

WASHINGTON, June 24, 2016—The World Bank today approved $150 million in additional financing to help strengthen Bangladesh’s health systems and improve health services, particularly for the poor.

This additional financing to the Health Sector Development Program will continue support to implement the government’s Health Sector-wide Program. The support will help the government address health sector challenges including: sustaining and improving immunization coverage; improving deliveries for pregnant women at public health facilities; and tackling multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. The financing will also help Bangladesh improve public financial management to get more value from its public spending on health. Further, the financing will support developing a robust health information system, including a web-based complaint -handling mechanism – the first in Bangladesh.

The Scope of Services and Responsibilities

1. Collect data from agricultural producers (farmers and aggregators) on fruits, vegetables and dairy in the project areas in Kyrgyzstan (with focus on dairy in Issyk Kul region), Tajikistan and Uzbekistan;
2. Analyze the existing situation with farmers on their available resources (land, crops, machinery, equipment, inputs, supply, finance, etc);
3. Map existing management practices and processes (planting, harvesting, storage, feeding, milking, housing, etc.), determine advantages and disadvantages in each practice and process;
4. Conduct market and field research to identify alternative, economically advantageous management options;
5. Analyze the economics of proposed management and production options;
6. Together with the team of international and local consultants, test proposed management options under the local conditions for the economic viability that would lead to the reduced cost and increased output;
7. Source alternative suppliers of inputs, equipment and machinery available in the market;
8. Monitor implementation process and undertake necessary actions to gain results;
9. Work with team of international and local consultants to coordinate research and recommendations;
