In October 2016, IFC launched a report on Unlocking Value: Alternative Fuels for Egypt’s Cement Industry. The study has identified the current status of co-processing in Egypt, analyzed the potential appetite for alternative fuels (AFR), highlighted impediments to market growth, and recommended potential solutions throughout the waste supply chain to ensure a sustainable market solution tailored to the Egyptian context, one solution in particular which was highlighted was to address key regulatory barriers. IFC seeks to appoint a local legal consulting firm to i) analyze existing solid waste laws and regulations in Egypt relevant to alternative fuels, ii) recommend required changes to existing laws and regulations or new laws and regulations to create favourable regulatory environment to alternative fuels, iii) participate in stakeholders workshops and meetings to present and discuss findings and iv) draft the policy and regulatory language (both English and Arabic).

To support our work, IFC is seeking a Strategy Consultant, who can support the Manager indexof Cross-Cutting Advisory Solutions Clean Energy & Resource Efficiency Unit [the Manager] in IFCs Istanbul Office for a 150-day contract. The Consultant will perform a variety of strategic planning and project management tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strengthen and enhance the Clean Energy & Resource Efficiency’s operations and interactions with other parts of the World Bank Group (Global Practices, Cross-Cutting Solution Areas, IFC and Regional Teams);
  • Provide input, analysis and recommendations across portfolio and operations related matters to support the Manager; liaise with relevant parties to collect and compile data from a variety of sources; conduct analyses; prepare analytical reports and/or presentations for dissemination;
  • Support the Manager in monitoring and managing deliveries;
  • Analyzing IFC portfolio and investment pipeline data by drawing from sources such as iDesk (IFCs system of record);

The objective of this work is to undertake the logistical and administrative aspects of a study to examine the production and consumption of charcoal in Haiti. The study will attempt to answer the following questions: (1) How much charcoal is consumed annually in the capital city of Port-au-Prince; (2) Which geographical regions produce the charcoal consumed in the capital; (3) How do these production areas variably supply charcoal consumption depending on seasonal demand fluctuations; and (4) In what ways has charcoal consumption in Port-au-Prince changed over time? The results of this study will produce important and up-to-date data that may inform policy decisions related to tree-planting, land and landscape management, and agricultural projects targeted toward Haiti’s majority, who live in rural areas and rely on agricultural production activities for their livelihoods.
