Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), Greater Dhaka, with an objective to improve public untitledinfrastructure for wastewater management in the selected areas under its jurisdiction (Zones 1 and 4) plans to develop, operate and maintain following facilities:
– a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP);
– a Sewerage Network System (SNS);
– a Centralized Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for industries; and
– a non-network fecal and sludge removal system in the non-sewerage areas.

Scientists are constantly getting better at knowing when the next hurricane, landslide, or aofr-facebook_0.pngflood will happen. However, science communication about these disasters lags behind. As Leonardo da Vinci described, art has a unique power to communicate this type of knowledge to people everywhere.  

Natural events and disasters of the past have influenced some of the most iconic art of our time. From Turner’s sunsets to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – both were composed in the shadow of the greatest volcanic eruption of our age, Mount Tambora in 1815. The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai (c. 1829–33) has been interpreted as a warning about tsunami risk. In an era of increasing natural hazards and climate change, art can also communicate the future risks we face.

Preventing and controlling corruption: A modern approach to procurement

eC2: Mauritania Water Sector: Institutional Diagnostic of the Central Directions and Structures (ONSER, CNRE) under the supervision of the MHA

The main objective of this study is to make a legal, institutional, organizational and technical (in terms of capacity) diagnosis of how the following institutions work and interact with one another to deliver drinking water and sanitation services to rural and semi-urban populations in Mauritania:
1. Directorate of Hydraulics
2. Directorate of Sanitation
3. Directorate of Hydrology and Dams
4. Policy, Monitoring and Cooperation Directorate
5. Regional Directorates of Hydraulics and Sanitation.
And the institutions under the supervision of the MHA which are:
6. ONSER
7. The CNRE
Based on this diagnosis, proposals for improving the organization, functioning and efficiency of these structures of the public water service will be formulated in the form of a functional reorganization plan of the MHA and the entities under its supervision. The ways and means needed to improve the interaction and cooperation between these various structures will also be laid down.

In recognition of the serious health challenges and the global dimension of the epidemic threats, the African Union Heads of States and Governments established the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a specialized agency of the African Union Commission and formally launched its operations on January 31, 2017.
The Africa CDC operates through three levels: (i) a secretariat based at the African Union headquarters (HQ) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; (ii) five Regional Collaborating Centers (RCCs) located in Egypt, Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia; and (iii) the National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) and Centers of Excellence. To assure a coherent network between the RCCs, the NPHIs and Centers of Excellence, Africa CDC launched the Regional Integrated Surveillance and Laboratory Network (RISLNET) as an integrated platform for strengthening national and regional surveillance and laboratory systems; and harnessing existing public health assets for disease prevention.

eC2: Development of national methodology for identification and designation of Heavily Modified Water Bodies (HMWBs)by further development of the national approach

This assignment aims at the development of a national methodology for identification and designation of HMWBs by further development of the existing national approach and adaptation of most recent international best practices. The methodology should comply with the Water Framework Directive and the relevant Common Implementation Strategy Guidance documents and should simultaneously consider the local specifics and the identified deficiencies during the previous cycles of River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs). It should largely (at this stage for 3rd RBMP) be based on available data regarding the various modifications and any appraisal guidance for them and any findings of such appraisals. A testing of the methodology with application of the “mitigation measures” methods for all types of physical modifications and uses of the surface water bodies is planned within the frame of the assignment by the use of readily available data.

Rebuilding communities after disasters – four and a half lessons learned

The death toll from Cyclone Idai that ripped into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi in IDAI Aftermath - A man fixes the roof of his house in Praia NovaMarch 2019 is now above 1,000, with damages estimated at $2 billion. In 2018, more than 10,000 people lost their lives in disasters (with $225 billion of economic losses). Approximately 79 percent of fatalities occurred in the Asia Pacific region, including the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island. In fact, 2017 and 2018 have been estimated as the most expensive back-to-back years for weather disasters, totaling $653 billion of losses.
