Assessment of engagements in financial services for basic service delivery (solar, water and education)

The objective of the research is to assess the extent to which CGAPs efforts were successful in influencing and contributing to the development of early applications of digital payments for the delivery of services such as solar energy, education and water in developing countries. The assignment will consist of an in-depth review and assessment of the CGAPs influence in the off-grid solar energy sector, and a more limited assessment for the education and water industries. The research will include a mix of secondary and primary research.

eC2: Small Hydropower Mapping in Myanmar

Myanmar is in a substantial need for new power generation capacities. The country has the lowest grid connected electrification rate in Southeast Asia, with only 42% of the population supplied. It is estimated that at least 500 MW of additional generation capacity is required to come on line annually up to 2030 to meet the growing domestic demand. Although the country has abundant freshwater resources, the hydropower sector has experienced relatively limited development compared to the identified potential total capacity. To date, no reliable information on Myanmar’s available small- and medium-size HPP potential is available, neither a comprehensive database on planned, under development and commissioned plants of these capacities exist. Therefore, in order to assess the options for development of greenfield small- and medium-size hydropower plants in Myanmar, IFC intends to collect information, prepare a database and map all HPPs in the country with the capacity between 2-30 MW.

eC2: Program Evaluation for the Environmental and Social Standards in Water Resources Development (Hydro E&S Advisory)

The program seeks to improve hydropower governance through the uptake of environmental and social standards and transparency in decision-making through 4 objectives.
(i) Improve and ensure implementation of policy and regulatory frameworks for the hydro sector to promote implementation of best practice E&S standards in Lao PDR,
(ii) Enable capacity in practical E&S risk management for government agencies (i.e. river basin committees) and other basin stakeholders to anticipate, evaluate, and manage cumulative impacts of hydro investments in selected river basins in Lao PDR.
(iii) Enable adoption of best practice E&S standards by regional banks investing in hydropower development in the Mekong region, to influence the way they assess their hydro investments.
(iv) Enable adoption of best practice E&S standards by hydropower companies to develop and implement E&S management systems for their companies and hydropower projects in the Mekong region.

eC2: Integrated Water and Hydropower Development in the Drina River Basin

Historically, two approaches have been used to assess the options for utilization of the HPP potential in the DRB:

1. Development of the basin-wide studies, followed by
2. Development of the technical design documents and environmental and social impact assessments for identified priority projects.

At this stage, in order to evaluate the options for construction of greenfield and rehabilitation of existing hydropower plants in the wider DRB, the WBG intends to conduct a detailed review of existing river basin studies as well as technical and environmental and social studies, reports and assessments developed for candidate HPP projects.

eC2: Capacity building in support of weather, water and climate services in Mali and Niger

The World Bank is one of the implementing partners of the Climate Risk and Early pexels-photo-831890.jpegWarning Systems (CREWS) initiative and through the CREWS initiative provides complementary technical assistance to the national hydrological and meteorological services of Mali and Niger in capacity building and institutional strengthening for national weather, water and climate services, early warning system. The World Bank is looking for a qualified consulting firm (incl. universities or similar institutions) to deliver technical assistance with this regard.

The overall objective of this assignment is to strengthen the capacity of the national hydro-meteorological services of Mali and Niger. More specifically, the consultancy has four main objectives: (a) Provide guidance for strengthening technical and human capacity of all relevant stakeholders in Mali and Niger; (b) Provide tailored short courses to strengthen the technical capacity of the technical experts of the national hydrometeorological services in Mali and Niger; (c) Provide guidance on the communication and awareness raising for effective weather, water and climate services in Mali and Niger; and (d) provide guidance on investment planning and public-private services for effective weather, water and climate services in Mali and Niger.

eC2: Deyang Water PPP Project – Technical Consultant

To assist IFC for this project, IFC intends to hire a team of Technical Consultants and Legal Consultants to provide specialized inputs for the Project. The Technical Consultant will assist IFC with all the technical aspects related to the development of the Project, assist IFC with structuring, preparing the tender documents, providing the technical inputs for the project, and other relevant agreements as required and assisting in conducting a transparent bidding process, including evaluation of the technical qualification of the bidders.

The 8th World Water Forum was held in Brazil a few days ago. What’s ironic is that the more than nine thousand of us attending this Forum were discussing water-related issues in a city of three million grappling with a severe water shortage. After checking in at my hotel, the first thing I found in my room was a notice from the Government informing guests of this crisis and recommending ways to reduce water use. We recently learned of the predicament in Cape Town, South Africa, which was on the verge of running out of this essential liquid—a plight facing many cities around the world.

eC2: Deyang Water PPP Project – Technical & Legal Consultant

Jingyang District (Jingyang) is the main district of Deyang City, located in the northeast PPPsedge of the Chengdu Plain in Sichuan Province, China. The Deyang District Government is providing water and limited sanitation service. In order to address significant challenges of the local water environment and improve waters services for over 230,000 people, Jingyang District Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (the Client) is seeking to implement a comprehensive centralized water project which includes the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of existing assets, and greenfield assets for sewage treatment, water supply, pipe networks, water source protection, and a cloud IT platform.
