Death in the Air: Air Pollution Costs Money and Lives

Air pollution has emerged as the fourth-leading risk factor for deaths worldwide. While pollution-related deaths mainly strike young children and the elderly, these deaths also result in lost labor income for working-age men and women. The loss of life is tragic. The cost to the economy is substantial. The infographic below is mainly based on findings from The Cost of Air Pollution: Strengthening the economic case for action, a joint study of the World Bank and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

The goals of the ELP Systems Research program are (1) to provide policymakers in a set of focus countries with actionable information to help guide the delivery of quality, equitable early learning at scale; and (2) to build the international evidence base in the emerging field of systems research in early childhood education. Funding is available for one research team for each of the following focus countries/regions: Ethiopia; Liberia; the province of Punjab, Pakistan; and Tanzania. An additional focus country may be added at a later time depending on the availability of funds.

MoU World Bank and Government of Curaçao

On Thursday September 15th the World Bank and the Government of Curaçao signed a Memorandum of 20160915-img_4375-2Understanding (MoU) focused on strengthen the relations and promoting the exchange of knowledge and expertise in areas of mutual interest. The Country Director for the Caribbean at the World Bank Ms. Sophie Sirtaine came to Curaçao for the official signing ceremony. The Government of Curaçao was represented by the Minister Economic Development.

The Minister of Finance was also involved in the process to get to this MoU. Both ministers were happy this MoU was signed as it is an expression of Curaçao’s desire to establish meaningful working relationships with strategic international partners in support of Curaçao’s long term sustainable development goals.
