In Senegal, a New Approach to Nutrition Drops Childhood Stunting

Ndeye Ngom is a first-time mother in Senegal’s Fatick region, 150 kilometers southeast of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. And like any parent, upon hearing the news that her daughter, 9-month-old Khady Faye, was underweight, Ndeye grew immediately worried. “I panicked when they told me the baby is malnourished,” Ndeye remembers. “This is not a disease we know.”

Ndeye’s concern for her daughter was not unfounded. Childhood stunting, an overarching measure of long-term malnutrition, has life-long consequences: It can reduce cognitive abilities, limit school attainment, decrease adult wages, and make children less likely to escape poverty as adults.

eC2: Clean Energy & Resource Efficiency Unit seeks Strategy Consultant

To support our work, IFC is seeking a Strategy Consultant, who can support the Manager indexof Cross-Cutting Advisory Solutions Clean Energy & Resource Efficiency Unit [the Manager] in IFCs Istanbul Office for a 150-day contract. The Consultant will perform a variety of strategic planning and project management tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strengthen and enhance the Clean Energy & Resource Efficiency’s operations and interactions with other parts of the World Bank Group (Global Practices, Cross-Cutting Solution Areas, IFC and Regional Teams);
  • Provide input, analysis and recommendations across portfolio and operations related matters to support the Manager; liaise with relevant parties to collect and compile data from a variety of sources; conduct analyses; prepare analytical reports and/or presentations for dissemination;
  • Support the Manager in monitoring and managing deliveries;
  • Analyzing IFC portfolio and investment pipeline data by drawing from sources such as iDesk (IFCs system of record);
  • Assist in the development of strategy documents and dissemination to relevant stakeholders;
  • Coordinate with colleagues from other functions (Human Resources, communications, fundraising, budget, Monitoring & Evaluation, quality, knowledge management) to ensure smooth functioning of the teams operations.

eC2: Estimating Current and Diachronic Charcoal Production and Consumption Trends

The objective of this work is to undertake the logistical and administrative aspects of a study to examine the production and consumption of charcoal in Haiti. The study will attempt to answer the following questions: (1) How much charcoal is consumed annually in the capital city of Port-au-Prince; (2) Which geographical regions produce the charcoal consumed in the capital; (3) How do these production areas variably supply charcoal consumption depending on seasonal demand fluctuations; and (4) In what ways has charcoal consumption in Port-au-Prince changed over time? The results of this study will produce important and up-to-date data that may inform policy decisions related to tree-planting, land and landscape management, and agricultural projects targeted toward Haiti’s majority, who live in rural areas and rely on agricultural production activities for their livelihoods.

Lagging lands, violent lands

Today, over 2 billion people live in lagging and violent lands with the processes ofeconomic isolation and violence closely linked. In Africa, close to 600 million people live within 90 minutes of violence. The issue of “lagging lands, violent lands” was examined at a World Bank seminar on April 22. The session focused on identifying options for stimulating sustainable and inclusive economic growth in lagging lands and urban spaces to bridge economic and social divisions and mitigate conflict and human vulnerability. An integrated policy framework combining the main thrusts of the World Development Report (WDR) 2009 on Reshaping Economic Geography and the WDR 2011 on Conflict, Security, and Development was at the core of diagnosing challenges and identifying solutions.

Competitiveness Boost Urgently Needed to Meet Africa’s Demographic Challenges

DURBAN, South Africa, May 4, 2017—Without urgent action to address stagnating psd-africa-competitiveness-report-2017-levels of competitiveness, Africa’s economies will not create enough jobs for the young people entering the job market, according to a report released today. If current policies remain unchanged, fewer than one-quarter of the 450 million new jobs needed in Africa in the next 20 years will be created.
