We are all too aware that difficult times lie ahead for coastal communitiesCoastal erosion, especially in West Africa, has already displaced communities, with economic losses costing about 2.3% of GDP in Togo alone. In the past 60 years, sea temperatures in the Western Indian Ocean increased 0.6 C, triggering mass coral bleaching and deadly climate-related disasters across the region. The economic cost of the 1998 coral bleaching event to Zanzibar and Mombasa was in the tens of millions of dollars. The natural cost is still unknown.

The objective of this consultancy is to design and conduct a workshops in both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar that will improve fluency with geospatial data across government in order to support and improve geospatial capacity in Tanzania and in particular understanding of open geospatial data. This will provide skills development for data collection and management, help participants improve the content and quality of geospatial datasets and strengthen the knowledge of open geospatial principles and standards.

One key aspect of the Benefit Sharing mechanism focuses particularly on the practice of offering direct financial equity or shares to local populations affected by the development of hydropower projects. The main objective of the consultants assignment is to oversee and guide the study of the delivery of Local Equity Sharing Schemes commonly referred to as Community Shares in Nepal, in the context of benefit sharing mechanisms applicable to hydropower projects.
What does it mean to be a ‘sustainable city’, and which cities around the world
are best at it? A new index sets out to find the most successful from a list of 100 cities. The ranking from Arcadis, a design and consultancy firm, and the Centre for Economic and Business Research, assesses the sustainability of cities based on three dimensions. The ranking also highlights the pressure cities are under – from population growth to natural disasters.
The stat is appalling: 1 in 3 women worldwide have or will experience intimate partner 
violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
Although it may take the form of domestic violence, gender-based violence is not merely a personal or family matter. Associated with certain societies’ social norms and many other risk factors, such violence leads to severe social and economic consequences that can contribute to ongoing poverty in developing and developed countries alike.
