World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings 2016 Development Committee Communiqué

1. The Development Committee met today, October 8, in Washington, D.C.

2. Global economic growth remains sluggish in 2016, with only a modest pick-up expected in 2017. Demand has remained soft despite highly stimulative monetary policies, foreign direct investment to developing countries has decreased, commodity exporters are adjusting to declines in exports, and wider geopolitical and economic uncertainties are weighing on confidence. We call on the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to work jointly with countries to enhance synergy among monetary, fiscal and structural reform policies, stimulate growth, create jobs, and strengthen the gains from multilateralism for all.

Reconstructed Village Canal Boosts Crop Output in Rural Community

  • Farmers in a rural community in Kandahar Province are seeing an increase in landproductivity since the rehabilitation of the village’s NSP (National Solidarity Program)water canal.
  • The project to improve and extend the village water canal was supported by the National Solidarity Programme of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development the Government of Afghanistan’s flagship program for rural development. Around 3,877 mall-scale development projects in Kandahar Province have been carried out in areas such as water and sanitation, irrigation, electricity, transportation, education, livelihoods and rural development.
  • NSP is supported by the International Development Association, the World Bank Group’s fund for the poorest countries, Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund, and Japan Social Development Fund

Statistics Netherlands and World Bank sign MoU

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and World Bank Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the desire to carry out activities cbsconducive to helping developing countries improve their statistical systems for collecting, processing and disseminating quality and timely data for evidence-based policymaking in order to achieve their national development goals as strive towards the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs).

Save the date: World Bank procurement event in The Hague on November 2, 2016

Last yeimagesar the Netherlands Enterprise Agency organized an event on procurement focused on the international financial institutions e.g. World Bank Group and Inter-American Development Bank. On November 2nd   in the Hague, a World Bank specific event will be organized in co-operation with the Netherlands’ Embassy in Washington, DC. The procurement event is geared to Dutch companies and organizations who have experience bidding for World Bank funded projects. Sessions will be organized to address specific aspects of and bottlenecks in the WBG procurement process. All sessions will be interactive, in small groups, and will address practical experiences in doing business with the World Bank. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) has introduced a new tool for small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s): business vouchers. Dutch SME’s can apply for a voucher, which they can use to purchase specific services from experienced consultants. It is a pilot project of the Dutch government, meant to complement the services the government already provides and to increase the competitiviness of Dutch SME’s when doing business with international organizations. The pilot runs until the end of 2016.

$81 Billion Mobilized in 2015 to Tackle Climate Change – Joint MDB Report

Manila, Philippines, August 9, 2016 – Climate finance totaling $81 billion was mobilized for projects funded by the world’s six largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) in 2015. This included $25 billion of MDBs’ direct climate finance, combined with a further $56 billion from other investors.

The latest MDB climate finance figures are detailed in the 2015 Joint Report on Multilateral Development Banks’ Climate Finance, prepared by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) together with MDB partners: the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDBG), and the World Bank Group (WBG).
