eC2: Port Sudan Water Supply: Water resource management at Arbaat dam

The State Water Corporation (SWC) for Red Sea State manages water supply for the city of Port Sudan. The city relies on two critical sources Arbaat Dam (which is under threat from siltation) and Arbaat well field. A new well field at Moj is also a potential source. This assignment aims to generate high quality data on the following: At Arbaat Dam & At Arbaat and Moj Wellfields. Outputs: A water resource monitoring report that includes a model of the sediment dynamics of the main catchment area (by Sep 2018). On-the-job-training and training manual for technical staff at SWC with responsibilities for the managing water resources for Port Sudan water supply (by Jun 2018)

eC2: Cumulative impacts of hydropower in the Kuri-Gongri River in Bhutan

The consultancy services will involve a study on cumulative impacts of hydropower in Kuri-Gongri River Basin. An inventory of all major water uses will be conducted for the Kuri-Gongri River basin in Bhutan, which hosts almost half of the total hydropower potential of Bhutan. This will include the use for hydropower, agriculture, water supply, as well as for environment, social and cultural purposes. Cumulative impacts of water uses and infrastructure development will be studied and quantified. The assignment will be conducted on a rapid basis during a period of nine months starting from October 2017. The estimated work input is 120 staff weeks of which at least 30% should be local expertise.

New World Bank Group Facility to Enable more than $1 billion for Women Entrepreneurship

HAMBURG, Germany, July 8, 2017—On the occasion of the G20 leaders’ summit, the nasikiliza-unleashing-the-potential-of-women-entrepreneurs-in-africa-feature-780x439World Bank Group today announced the creation of an innovative new facility that aims to enable more than $1 billion to advance women’s entrepreneurship and help women in developing countries gain increased access to the finance, markets, and networks necessary to start and grow a business.

The United States initiated the idea for the facility and will serve as a founding member along with other donor countries.

eC2: Decision Tree Initiative – Multidimensional Risk Management of Flood Protection Infrastructure & Irrigated Cropland Expansion

The Government of Kenya (GoK) is partnering with the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank to develop and implement the Kenya Water Security and Climate Resilience Program (KWSCRP). The detailed design for the LN irrigation scheme and flood dikes, will be completed for review by May 7, 2017, and construction contracts award expected in October -November 2017. The client is very interested in the climate change risk assessment and management for the flood protection infrastructure and irrigated cropland expansion as well as the resilience level of the integrated flood risk management system. The overall objective of the consultancy is to quantitatively assess the climate change risk vis-à-vis other risks unrelated to such change, followed by guidelines for a phased adaptation leading to increased resilience of the integrated Nzoia River Flood Program and irrigated expansion using the Decision Tree Framework.

eC2: E-WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM INDIA

The IFC project aims to support the development of an e-waste management solution for the electronics industry to address the challenge of responsible collection and recycling of electronic waste in India at scale and in a cost-effective manner. The goal of the IFC project is to work with private sector entities such as Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) and Industry Associations and waste management companies to establish a long-term solution to the e-waste challenges in India that the electronics sector as well as consumers face. The fundamental objectives of the Project are to (i) establish an Industry-led Solution for electronic producers to responsibly manage, collect and ensure responsible recycling of obsolete or discarded electronic products (e-Waste), (ii) Raise awareness among the public and other key stakeholders on the need of responsibly collect and recycle e-waste, and (iii) develop a locally relevant system for responsible e-waste management in India and a toolkit for dissemination of learnings from the Project.

Supporting development for peace to make a difference on the ground

I had the opportunity recently to participate in the Third Edition of the World Reconstruction Conference, where I was reminded once again of a sobering reality – that we live in an increasingly interconnected world where multiple crjuly2017_conflict_fb_introblogises overlap in complex ways, from the impacts of climate change to a spike in violent conflict, historically high levels of forced displacement, and the worst famine in 70 years.

At the same time, I was encouraged by how the international community is coming together, breaking silos to forge a comprehensive response. While the Conference focused on the role of post-crisis recovery and reconstruction for resilience building and disaster risk reduction, partners recognized the complexity of this effort. The joint communique noted that conflict and fragility require special attention as it can aggravate the impact of natural disasters and make the recovery process more challenging.

eC2:Technical Advisor for Mauritius Water Utility Affermage PPP

IFC has been mandated by the Government of Mauritius – through the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities – to assist in structuring and tendering an affermage arrangement for the Central Water Authority (CWA), the national water utility. As part of its mandate, IFC will be appointing several consultants to support, including an international engineering firm, which will be required to evaluate CWA’s operations, assess capex planning and financials, provide inputs to the financial model, and evaluate the current structure of CWA and perform a skills assessment. A World Bank study was carried out in 2016 to identify PPP options for improving CWA’s performance, which included technical due diligence so the purpose of this study will be to update the study and supplement as necessary. Additional details are contained in the attached terms of reference.
