eC2: Development of a Smart Mobility Implementation Guideline: Benchmarking and Piloting

1. Benchmarking the existing international smart mobility cases and best practice, including a diagnosis of the current situation (needs, challenges, and opportunities for sector reforms) associated with the performance of ITS/smart urban mobility systems in selected Bank’s client cities. 2. Develop a proposal for a smart mobility implementation guideline with the following dimensions: Implementation readiness assessment method – Transport systems and services, and dimensions, to be integrated – ICT architecture, data standards, and protocols 3. Develop detailed implementation action plans and recommendations for pilot activities in Panama on multi-modal and multi-provider payment system integration, integrated bus fleet management systems, well as advanced traffic monitoring and automated enforcement for strategic transit corridors, alongside the implementation of dynamic charging schemes for infrastructure cost recovery models. Carry out desk reviews for the application of the implementation guideline on these smart mobility topics for Vietnam/Turkey pilots. 4. Dissemination and capacity building for selected Bank’s client cities.

The objective of this assignment is to investigate the market potential for smallholder agricultural insurance in Lesotho. It will focus on the identification of insurance providers who would be willing to offer this type of insurance, existing factors that may enhance or limit their ability to enter into this market, as well as the potential for integrating insurance within the priority value chains. The priority value chains for the purposes of this study are grains, dairy, horticulture (fruit/vegetables), poultry, piggery, and fisheries/aquaculture.

As climate and disaster threats rise, let’s double down on resilient infrastructure

From tsunamis in Asia and earthquakes in Latin America, to hurricanes in the Caribbeanvietnam_blog and cyclones in Africa, disasters caused by natural hazards claimed some 1.3 million lives between 1998 and 2017, and wreaked untold havoc on livelihoods and infrastructure worldwide.

We see no sign of the risk posed by natural hazards decreasing, particularly having witnessed the devastating impact of Cyclone Idai on families and communities in Africa earlier this year. What’s worse, climate change is making storms, floods, droughts, and heatwaves even more frequent, damaging, and deadly.

Which countries reduced poverty rates the most?

One of the goals of the World Bank Group is to reduce extreme poverty—defined as indexliving on less than $1.90 per day in 2011 PPP—to less than 3% by 2030. We know that the world has seen tremendous progress in reducing extreme poverty since 1990. So, where in the world has poverty reduction been most successful?

The graph below shows 15 countries that experienced the largest annual average percentage point declines in extreme poverty rate between about 2000 and 2015, out of the 114 countries for which we can measure poverty in a comparable way over this period.

To support the entry of private energy firms to the Kakuma-Kalobeyei area as part of the KKCF, it is imperative that market-oriented data be available and packaged appropriately to make the commercial case for energy solutions for mini-grids, SHS, cooking, and productive use. In addition to making the commercial case, the practical steps toward entry of a private firm to the area should also be addressed (how to access land, what role would RAS or UNHCR play, if any, etc.). The assessment will cover Kakuma Town and Kakuma Camp, Kalobeyei Town and Kalobeyei Settlement. More specifically, the work conducted on mini-grid, SHS and productive use will cover Kakuma Camp and Town while the work on energy for cooking will cover both Kakuma Camp and Town and Kalobeyei Settlement and Town.

eC2: Study to identify opportunities for private sector engagements in the refugee hosting areas of Uganda under the Dutch Partnership for Improved Prospects

The market assessment will focus on three major components of energy including (a.) energyclean energy for Lighting and household appliances (TV, radio, fan etc.), (b.) clean energy for cooking, and (c.) clean energy for productive use (agribusiness, driers, cold storage, etc.) The study would require both primary and secondary data collection and need to be complemented by interviews with local authorities, Ugandan national officials, refugee and host community representatives (including exclusive interviews with women with an appropriate gender lens), UNHCR, active development partners, relevant private companies and a review of relevant literature.

eC2: INDIA: Due Diligence for Installing Floating Solar Project in Omkareshwar Reservoir, Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh, the central state of India, has been in the forefront to contribute

significantly towards promotion of clean energy solutions in the country as well as globally. To take such initiatives forward, Government of MP through its agency Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMS) – has requested the World Bank to support them on new technologies such as floating solar. On request of the Government of India, World Bank is already supporting Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), under Innovations in Solar Power & Hybrid technologies project, to invest in early demonstration projects but with an objective to also build a robust pipeline of such projects while developing the policy and regulatory ecosystem. As part of deepening the market for floating solar projects in the country, engagement with MP will be an important step. This is specifically important as lack of experience in deploying several of these technologies in India, and globally, at scale is considered as a major constraint by various developers, financiers and other stakeholders.
World Bank will support RUMS and Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (NHDC) in exploring potential of floating solar project in one of the states water bodies Omkareshwar Dam in Khandwa district of MP.

eC2: Turkey: Market assessment for direct uses of geothermal energy

different options for direct uses of geothermal energy in Turkey, including district heating and cooling. This includes both projects where low to medium temperature resources are utilized directly and also projects were residual heat in geothermal brines at geothermal power plants is used.

Tasks are expected to include:
– Country-wide, high-level assessment of direct use potential
– Preparation of pre-feasibility studies for selected applications
– Assessment of interest of municipalities and private developers
– Estimation of investment needs to allow the market to grow to its potential
– Barrier assessment
– Preparation of action plan/roadmap for the promotion of direct uses of geothermal resources
