Time is Money: Transforming Dar es Salaam’s Road Transport to Reduce Dense Traffic
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and Tanzanian President John Magufuli unveiled the foundation stone for the Ubongo Interchange, which will ease transportation bottlenecks and help businesses.
- The interchange is supported by a $225 million concessional credit from the International Development Association (IDA), in addition to an IDA Scale-up Facility Credit of $200 million.
- Under the first phase of the Bus Rapid Transit system, roundtrip travel time on the corridor was reduced by 90 minutes a day, saving commuters 16 days of sitting in traffic.

IFC is looking for a Consultant to help assess the impact of two GAFSP/IFC projects in Tanzania/Senegal , investments in two banks in Tanzania/Senegal to support their agriculture finance business. These are two separate, stand-alone, assessments. The reason they are included in this same selection is that IFC prefers to have one Consultant conduct both assessments given that they are in the same country. The methodology is expected to be quasi-experimental design with quantitative and qualitative data collection. The Consultant is expected to have extensive experience in conducting impact evaluations in the agribusiness sector in developing countries.

As a bridge between research and development operations, DIME provides a substantial knowledge contribution by generating high-quality evidence across a set of strategic development areas. The IE Text Messaging for Behavior Change in Zambia is part of the DIME program and aims to use a novel text-messaging-based intervention to: 1) identify behavioral barriers that lead to low engagement with formal financial services amongst those using the services; and 2) test strategies to help people overcome those barriers to increase engagement and financial security. To implement this IE, DIME is seeking proposals for a technology partner to operate a two-way conversational text-message system to improve savings account usage and improve loan repayment rates for financial sector clients in Zambia

The proposed study will investigate the risks created by lake level fluctuation now and under climate change for transport on and around Lake Victoria, and identify solutions to reduce these risks. It will answer the following questions: how would different lake water-level scenarios (e.g., overall increase, overall decrease, and status quo. and associated variation range) impact transport operations (port infrastructure and operations and access roads) given different scenarios on shipping demand growth? What could be good investment strategies given that we cannot predict future lake level fluctuation or transport demand on the lake?
