The initiative, a joint effort of the Water and the Energy Global Practices at the World Bank, has finally come to an end. We wanted to reflect on the lessons learnt along the way, as our team has developed a fantastic set of material and methodologies to move the needle forward on this issue. We hope that the global community takes advantage of this to ignite change.

How Should Governments and Development Institutions Engage the Private Sector?
Blog post by Tony Elumelu ( Entrepreneur and philanthropist )
Across the globe, the private sector has an important role to play in the achievement of the SDGs. With slow global growth and the end of the commodity supply cycle, many governments do not have resources required to fully pursue their development goals. And this is where the resources of the private sector become very critical. Through partnerships, the private and public sector can discover areas of alignment, especially in critical areas such as infrastructure, power, and agriculture, to mention but a few.
eC2: Preparation of baseline reports for the Water Global Practice results framework
Deadline: 05-Oct-2017 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time – Washington D.C.)
The Water GP has defined an innovative results framework (RF) to track combined results from activities funded by the GWSP multi-donor trust fund and World Bank-financed operations. This results framework has been defined in partnership with donors to the GWSP to allow them to track the additionality of funding they provide to the multidonor trust fund. In a spirit of integration with WB operations, the RF was designed as a comprehensive framework for the WGP as a whole. Underlining the RF, the WGP has identified five priority themes where emphasis is critically needed to achieve the SDG for water (SDG 6) and contribute to many other SDGs which are so closely interlinked with the achievement of a Water-Secure world for all. These five themes are areas where countries need to redouble their efforts and in some cases, revise their strategies to increase their chances of meeting the water SDG: they include sustainability, inclusion, institutions, financing and resilience.
The biggest bang for our limited water and sanitation buck: can investing in small towns lead the way?
While the share of poor people in Sub-Saharan Africa decreased from 56 percent in 1990 to 43 percent in 2012, the region’s rapid population growth outpaced the decrease in
poverty, resulting in higher number of poor people than before. More specifically, Africa’s urban population is expected to triple in size in the next half century, which is putting pressure on scarce resources in cities, exacerbated by capacity, budget and governance bottlenecks. The densely-populated areas with low levels of water and sanitation services pose a serious threat to public health – cholera epidemics have broken out in urban areas in several African countries in recent years.
How can water utilities provide reliable water to poor people in African cities?
