World Bank Group’s Operational Response to COVID-19 (coronavirus) – Projects List

The World Bank Group is taking broad, fast action to help developing countries WBG_C19_25countries_web_clean780strengthen their pandemic response, increase disease surveillance, improve public health interventions, and help the private sector continue to operate and sustain jobs. It is deploying up to $160 billion in financial support over the next 15 months to help countries protect the poor and vulnerable, support businesses, and bolster economic recovery. On April 2, the first group of projects using the dedicated COVID-19 Fast-Track Facility, amounting to $1.9 billion and assisting 25 countries, was rolled out. In addition, the World Bank is working worldwide to redeploy resources in existing World Bank financed projects worth up to $1.7 billion, including through restructuring and use of projects’ emergency components as well as contingent financing instruments designed for catastrophes, including pandemics. Below is list of countries that are getting Bank Group support through the FTF as well as other financing mechanisms.

misallocation of resources and holds back investment, innovation, entrepreneurship, growth and productivity. It can have important distributional implications as its effects may fall more heavily on some agents than others.

At the same time, levels of corruption vary across countries, even among ones at roughly the same level of economic development (figure 1). Why is corruption higher in some places than others? Answering this can help identify what leads to corruption. This is an essential first step in designing polices aimed at curbing this undesirable practice.

In this piece, President David Malpass highlights the progress the Bank Group has made in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

March 2020 global poverty update from the World Bank: New poverty estimates for 2018

The March 2020 global poverty update added more than 200 new surveys to PovcalNet,

bringing the total number of surveys to more than 1,900. New poverty estimates for the reference year 2018 are now included for some regions, and the previously published global and regional estimates from 1981 to 2015 have been revised, reflecting data revisions and the availability of new data. More details on the revisions can be found in Atamanov et al. (2020).

eC2: Development of digital tools for evaluation of performance-based contracts and performance-based financing in the health sector of Nigeria

The World Bank would like to evaluate the impact of the performance-based contracting with the private sector and performance-based financing of the public health facilities on the nutrition outcomes of Nigeria. The findings of the assessment will inform the Government of Nigerias programmatic and financial decisions with respect to performance-based contracting with the private sector and performance-based financing of social sector programs, including in the health and nutrition sector. In support of the assignment objective, the World Bank proposes to hire a firm to develop, test and finalize digital tools that will be used by the World Bank to collect and report longitudinal data for the evaluation of performance-based contracts and performance-based financing in the social sectors in Nigeria.

eC2: Textiles sector Assessment and Feasibility study to implement wastewater reuse

The 2030 Water Resources Group (2030 WRG), hosted at The World Bank , promotes multi-stakeholder platforms across 14 countries globally bringing public-private-civil society sector to work together to meet water sector challenges. 2030 WRG is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Vietnam Environmental Protection Administration to develop projects related to promoting water treatment, reuse and recycle. This solicitation is intended to invite competent consultants to carry out an assessment of reuse potential and develop a prefeasibility report.

eC2: Impactful Women: Examining Opportunities and Constraints for Women in Mining Organizations Worldwide

The ultimate objective of this project is to enhance the impact of WIM organizations and other types of associative professional interest groups which are championing gender diversity within the mining industry. By providing analysis of the structures and focuses of WIM associations, as well as challenges and opportunities facing WIM associations, this research project could help guide future engagement with WIM associations by governments and intergovernmental organizations, multilateral institutions, businesses, not-for-profit organizations and other groups and individuals interested in taking impactful action to promote womens participation in mining around the world. The research output will be utilized to implement and monitor specific actions to increase the voice and agency of women professionals in the mining industry. In the meantime, WIM associations can also benefit from this research, as to what has worked well for other groups, whether to make changes to their leadership and membership structures, which focus areas to invest their human and financial resources in, etc.
