We are emerging from decades of a “grow now, clean up later” mindset that delivered
development dividends, while hiding a host of social and environmental issues. In 2020, this paradigm hit headfirst into the realities of a global pandemic, worsening climate change, and conflict. Across poor countries and in poor communities, people who had only marginally benefited from development were the first to experience its shortcomings.

Success Story: BearingPoint
Tax compliance as a tool for development of small-sized countries
Dutch headquartered BearingPoint Caribbean were recently awarded a World Bank funded
project to modernize the tax administration on the Caribbean island of Grenada. The Grenada Inland Revenue Department (IRD) will be the 15th tax administration to use BearingPoint’s innovative software.
Grenada, like many other Small Island Developing States (SIDS), is highly vulnerable to climate change, natural disasters, and the economic dependence on tourism. In the post-Covid-19 era, the government of Grenada therefore wants to develop more resilience by improving fiscal sustainability. Domestic resource mobilization is now more important than ever.

Blue Economy for Resilient Africa Program
About the Blue Economy for a Resilient Africa Program

World Bank Group Priorities at COP27
Action and Impact
By David Malpass, President, The World Bank Group
Climate change – caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities – poses a major threat to people and development. Poverty, development and climate change need to be tackled together, acknowledging the interconnections between people, planet, and the economy. Climate action is a key global public good, requiring major new financing from the global community and mechanisms for inflows. Mitigation activities are needed to reduce GHG emissions in our shared atmosphere. Adaptation activities need to redouble to reduce the added hunger, migration, conflict, and trade protectionism generated by climate change.
