The National Student Assessment (NSA) 2011, 2013 and NSA 2015 assessed the learning for-better-early-childhood-care-and-education-in-sri-lankaachievement of the aforementioned pupils relative to the learning outcomes prescribed in the primary curriculum. Other objectives were: to investigate differences in pupil achievement by key system, school and pupil factors {e.g., division, district, school type, locality (urban v. rural), and gender}; to examine the relationships between achievement and factors such as school size, class size, pupil-teacher ratio, attendance rate, teachers’ qualifications and training, training of school managers, and frequency of inspection; and to draw implications for improvements in teaching and learning through enhanced policy actions, planning and management, and teacher education. It is expected that relevant Government of Bangladesh (GoB) line agencies will utilize the findings and recommendations in order to inform educational planning of sub-components such as teacher professional development and curriculum reform.

Charting a path to valuing the world’s most precious resource

Article published on http://www.worldbank.org.

Most people agree that water is an extremely valuable resource—for farmers who depend on it to grow crops, for factories that need it to cool machines and spin turbines and, of course for life itself. But unlike most other valuable resources, it’s hard to put a price on water. The very fact that water is so important to people, economies, and the environment means that it is tough to even agree on a common way of valuing it.

No less an economic mind than Adam Smith was stumped by this challenge. As he famously observed, “Nothing is more useful than water: but it will purchase scarcely anything. A diamond, on the contrary, has scarcely any use-value; but a very great quantity of other goods may frequently be had in exchange for it.”

eC2: Clean Technology Manufacturing value chain in Egypt

Deadline: 28-Feb-2017 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time – Washington D.C.)

The Government of Egypt (GoE) is one of T&Cs current clients. The country has committed light-bulb-297489_640to improving and promoting energy efficiency driven by the energy security risks associated with the pressures from growing population and rising fuel demand on its finite fossil fuel supply. This shortage of traditional fuels poses a serious challenge to the industrial growth of Egypt. The industrial sector energy demand amounts to approximately one third of final energy production. Yet energy efficiency within industries is not adequately exploited due to high energy subsidies, the lack of an effective policy framework, weak environmental law enforcement, and the lack of availability of clean technologies in the local market, among other factors.

eC2:Climate change impacts on the transport sector on Lake Victoria and mitigation strategies

Deadline: 16-Feb-2017 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time – Washington D.C.)Climate-Change-Story-Banner

The proposed study will investigate the risks created by lake level fluctuation now and under climate change for transport on and around Lake Victoria, and identify solutions to reduce these risks. It will answer the following questions: how would different lake water-level scenarios (e.g., overall increase, overall decrease, and status quo. and associated variation range) impact transport operations (port infrastructure and operations and access roads) given different scenarios on shipping demand growth? What could be good investment strategies given that we cannot predict future lake level fluctuation or transport demand on the lake?
