Putting biodiversity at the heart of IDA’s work

When people talk about biodiversity, it is often through the lens of conservation and theuntitled survival of animal and plant species. But the value drawn from a healthy biosphere is much more than that – it delivers a steady supply of food, water, jobs and livelihoods and helps to regulate climate.

Nature underpins all forms of life and economic activities, but this way of life is threatened on many fronts.  Our oceans are overfished and polluted with plastic; 1 million plant and animal species (out of 8 million) face extinction within decades, according to the latest scientific assessments, and deforestation and soil degradation have reached epic levels.

Global Community Renews Commitment to the World’s Poorest Countries with $82 Billion

STOCKHOLM, December 13, 2019 — A global coalition of development partners announced today their commitment to maintain momentum in the fight against extreme poverty, with $82 billion for the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s fund for the poorest. The financing, which includes more than $53 billion for Africa, will help countries invest in the needs of their people, boost economic growth, and bolster resilience to climate shocks and natural disasters.

There will be key criteria for the development of the deliverables:
1. Gender Gaps: A focus on gender equality priorities across the categories policy, leadership, employment, is expected.
2. Client Focus: The focus will be on providing relevant content and recommendations( strategies/remedial actions, activities and programmes) to the WB and KenGen which will be focused in the energy sector and other sectors such as education etc.
3. Partnerships: The consultant will be expected to map out feasible partnerships with e.g. like minded companies and institutions professional associations, universities and NGOs as part of the outputs delivered.
4. Budget and Sustainability: Key will be mapping costs and timelines of the interventions proposed in the gender options analysis. This is essential for sustainability.
5. Key Performance Indicators. What will be the success factors
6. Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. Define how to measure success

eC2: Validation of the typology and classification system in Bulgaria for assessment the ecological status of surface water bodies of categories “river”, “lake and “transitional waters

Deadline: 08-Jan-2020 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time – Washington D.C.) water

The assignment covers the following tasks:
1 Validation and biological confirmation of the updated typology of the surface waters
2 Validation of the classification system for the assessment of the ecological status/ecological potential of specific for Bulgaria types rivers and development of the classification system for transitional waters of river type R16;
3 Validation of the classification system for the assessment of the ecological status/potential for the types of lakes, reservoirs and development the classification system for transitional waters of lake types L7, L8, L9, and L10.
4 Identification and assessment of the interrelation: anthropogenic pressure-impact-biotic response.
5 Determination of the capacity of water bodies to assimilate nutrient pollution.
6 Finalizing and validation of the classification system for assessment of the ecological status/ecological potential of all national types of surface water bodies.
7 Design and development of a project geodatabase

Strategy for Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV)

The World Bank Group is developing its first strategy for Fragility, Conflict and Violence fragilityforum_logo(FCV). The overarching objective of the strategy is to address the drivers of FCV in affected countries and their impact on vulnerable populations, with the ultimate goal of contributing to peace and prosperity. The final strategy will seek to guide and systematize the World Bank Group’s work in FCV contexts over the next five years.

eC2: Development of the Urban Nature-Based Solutions Rapid Assessment Tool

Deadline: 19-Dec-2019 at 11:59:59 PM (Eastern Time – Washington D.C.) water

The Urban NBS Rapid Assessment will facilitate World Bank task teams in these challenges. The tool or assessment methodology will increase understanding of the performance of urban NBS and helps to identify potential investments in NBS in cities. The tool can be used in the early (pre-feasibility) stage of a project, to support dialogue with client countries and during community consultations, rather than as a design tool. The main audience of the tool will be city governments, project leaders and development partners, who will be investing in urban development interventions.

Newsletter December 2019: Energy for Development

The newsletter ‘Energy for Development ‘headlines with why the Business Opportunities Fair (BOF) with a focus on climate-smart energy was a success for Dutch company BladeRunner Energy. The BOF was co-hosted by the World Bank Group Liaison officers took place in Washington, D.C. | October 29-31. BladeRunner did not have any previous experience with the World Bank Group or any other IFI before having attended this event, which had over 160 participants from around the world. At the end of the 2.5-day program BladeRunner Energy CEO Paul Vosbeek left with a stack of business cards, new potential investors/partners and a comprehensive plan on how to approach not only the World Bank Group but also other IFIs. For those who were not able to attend we have shared a Business Opportunities Fair recap as well as the presentations.
