IFC’s award-winning match-making program, TechEmerge, has launched its new unnamedSustainable Cooling program in Latin America (Mexico, Colombia) to drive innovation in climate-smart, energy-efficient cooling technologies, products, and services, where it’s needed most. Phase one focuses on Latin American cities, specifically those in Mexico and Colombia, and will match innovators from across the world with leading local companies and municipalities to pilot projects and build commercial partnerships. Sustainable Mobility for All: Changing the mindset, changing policies

The global conversation on transport and mobility has evolved significantly over the pastgreen-light-pedestrian-photoviriya-shutterstock five years. Take transport and climate, for instance: although data on the carbon footprint of major transport modes had been available for a long time, it was not until COP21 in 2015 that mobility became a central part of the climate agenda. The good news is that, during that same period, the space of solutions expanded as well.  For example, data sharing is now viewed as an obvious way to promote better integration between urban transport modes in cities.

How can Indonesia achieve a more sustainable transport system?

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,500 islands, is the fourth most populous id-street-scene-jakarta-un-women-flickrcountry in the world, with 261 million inhabitants, and the largest economy in Southeast Asia, with a nominal Gross Domestic Product of $933 billion.

Central government spending on transport increased by threefold between 2010-2016. This has enabled the country to extend its transport network capacity and improve access to some of the most remote areas across the archipelago.

When (and when not) to use PPPs

highway-2211588_1280In the context of strained public finances and limited borrowing capacity for developing countries, there is growing debate on the roles of public and private actors to deliver the trillions of dollars of infrastructure necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On one hand, high-profile public-private partnership (PPP) project failures have cast doubt about the viability of the model. On the other hand, while public authorities are ultimately responsible for the delivery of public services, deficient infrastructure services in some countries have raised concerns about the ability of the public sector to deliver on its own.

eC2: Fuelwood Demand Assessment and Analysis

To conduct a study which will be to: i) ascertain the level of demand for fuelwood in Albania, ii) analyze the fuelwood supply chain, processing and combustion to identify opportunities to increase the efficiency of firewood use, iii) estimate the overall balance between the sustainable supply and current demand, and iv) recommend to government any opportunities to improve the supply and efficiency of heating for the rural towns and villages.

Ecuador Sustainable Family Farming Modernization Project – Update

On Tuesday, June 30 we reported about the Ecuador Sustainable Family Farming Modernization Project that would be discussed in the Board of Directors. The project is now approved.

The Project development objective is to enhance incomes of small and medium sized farm households by supporting more productive and climate-smart use for land and water.
