The consultant will organize 2 workshops each in Varanasi (Location 1) and Sambhal (Location 2) districts of Uttar Pradesh, i.e. a total of 4 workshops. The two workshops in each location comprise (1) Workshop with farmers, community members, local representatives, and (2) Workshop with local government representatives, civil society, private sector and other stakeholders, respectively. The consultant will design the workshops, identify and invite appropriate participants, manage logistics of the workshops, and submit a detailed report to the World Bank documenting discussions in detail and highlighting key takeaways in line with the objectives. The consultant will be hired for a period of 12 weeks.

Rapid urbanization and rising populations in cities has led to increasing number of fuel-based transport vehicles causing severe air and noise pollution. The Government of India (GoI) as well as different States in India are looking for innovating mechanisms to address urban mobility challenges including use of electric vehicles (EV). GoI’s Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 focuses on national energy security, addresses environmental impacts from road transport vehicles and supports domestic manufacturing capabilities for electric vehicles. The GoI has identified electric mobility as one of the key focus areas for development.

Across India, Solar Power Brings More than Light

DULU SARNA, India—Sarita Asur, a subsistence farmer and young mother of three, lives maxresdefault in one of India’s most remote tribal areas—a place so isolated that it’s not just off the power grid, it’s also absent from most maps. She and her community, the Asur tribe, are based in the eastern state of Jharkhand.  Nearly half of the people in this isolated territory lack access to electricity—the highest percentage of any state in India.

So when Azure Power, a private solar provider and longstanding IFC client, won a contract to bring power to 320 households in 11 mud-brick villages scattered across the state, the first item of business was to locate these communities. Engineers spent a week driving and trekking through waterlogged jungle to identify the coordinates of each village—including Sarita Asur’s. Next, Azure Power arranged to transport the equipment (including 450-pound batteries) on the narrow, unpaved roads of one of India’s poorest regions. Continue reading →

The objective of this assignment is to support the Bureau of Energy Efficiency in developing options for enhancing the energy efficiency of pack-houses in India. 

The assignment objective will be achieved through an analysis of current energy consumption trends in different types of pack-houses, assessments of the implications of capacity addition projections, identification of energy efficiency improvement opportunities in pack houses, and drawing lessons from relevant experience in India and internationally. The assignment is expected to result in a set of recommendations for BEE action to promote energy efficiency in the cold chain, pack-houses in particular. Actions that BEE may consider in this area can include specific guidance related to equipment and appliance, insulation, building design, and ancillary equipment that can minimize energy consumption.

IFC has been approached by one of the state governments in India to structure Infrastructure_Financing_PPPs_MENAaffordable housing development under Public Private Partnership (PPP) based on their Affordable Housing Policy for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low-Income Group (LIG) beneficiaries. The Project comprises of the design and construction of affordable housing units on a greenfield sites in up to 6 cities. In this context, IFC is seeking to hire specialized team of Technical Consultants, which will assist IFC with all the technical and design aspects of AH units, detailed break-up of the site development for residential and commercial uses, along with their cost estimates, development of performance specifications for the private sector, reviewing and assimilating elements of housing finance in the transaction structure, analyzing the existing policy framework to optimize the project capacity and project design, analyzing the issues related to providing access to housing finance to beneficiaries, evaluation of how to most efficiently ensure subsidies are flowing to needy beneficiaries, define technical criteria for qualification and technical evaluation of the applications and shortlist bidders. The detailed terms of reference shall be shared later with the shortlisted entities.
