WASHINGTON, DC, August 28, 2025 – The World Bank Board of Directors has approved a new operation to boost the environmental governance of the State of Amazonas by enhancing its fiscal sustainability, and mobilizing finance for forest conservation and a low-carbon bioeconomy. This will provide more economic opportunities and jobs for the State’s population, especially Indigenous Peoples, smallholders, and traditional forest-dwelling populations.

Preserving the Treasures of the Amazon
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Amazon region is home to 10% of the world’s known species, and there is still much to discover.
- Many Amazonian species are threatened by habitat loss, environmental crimes such as poaching and other human activities.
- The Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program has projects in seven countries in the region, working with communities to address these issues.
eC2: Capacity Building Program for Community Forestry Management

The objective of this consultancy is to design and implement a capacity building program
for community forestry that will benefit the implementation of the ASL projects in Brazil, Peru and Colombia. The process should involve a comprehensive study tour that will provide an opportunity for the participants to learn from successful cases and receive technical knowledge. Considering similarities with the conditions of the ASL projects, it is suggested that the study tour considers learning from the community management experiences In the Guatemala Maya Biosphere Reserve. Due to previous engagement in forest community, working with the Association of Forest Communities of Peten (ACOFOP) and the NGO PRIMSA would be required.
The capacity building program should also encourage the establishment of a community of learners among the beneficiaries, offering them with tools to become trainers of peers in their own countries and within their projects. The program shall also result in a set of guidelines to allow scaling up for other participants, exchanges and topics.
