World Bank Group Launches New Program to Support Africa’s Top Digital Entrepreneurs
WASHINGTON, April 25, 2017 — The World Bank Group launched XL Africa, a five-month business acceleration program designed to support the 20 most promising digital start-ups from Sub-Saharan Africa. Start-ups will receive mentoring from global and local experts, learn through a tailor-made curriculum, increase their regional visibility, and get access to potential corporate partners and investors. With support from prominent African investment groups, XL Africa will help the 20 selected start-ups attract early stage capital between $250,000 and $1.5 million.

- The Development Committee, a ministerial-level forum of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, issued a communiqué at the close of the institutions’ Spring Meetings in Washington.
- They said the World Bank Group retains an essential role in helping ensure that growth is sustainable, with benefits that reach everyone and help reduce poverty and inequality.
- On the urgent issues of famine and forced displacement, the committee cited both “efforts to mobilize and rapidly disburse support for countries, communities, and refugees” and the importance of “investing to address the root causes and drivers of fragility and helping countries build institutional and social resilience.”

Industrial Commodity Prices to Rise in 2017: World Bank
Press release: Oil prices to average $55 per barrel in 2017, rise next year
WASHINGTON, April 26, 2017— The World Bank is forecasting higher prices for 
industrial commodities, principally energy and metals, in 2017 and next year.
The World Bank in its April Commodity Markets Outlook is holding steady its crude oil price forecast for this year at $55 per barrel, increasing to an average of $60 per barrel in 2018. Rising oil prices, supported by production cutbacks by Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC states, will allow markets to gradually rebalance. These oil price forecasts are subject to downside risks should the rebound in the U.S. shale oil industry be greater than expected.

To support the prevention of violence against women and girls, the World Bank Group and Sexual Violence Research Initiative will award 10 teams from around the world with funds to support research and innovation to help address this global epidemic. Nearly 1 billion women and girls across all countries and cultures will experience intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. Violence experienced by women and girls is an obstacle to development gains, as it impedes their full participation in society, limits access to education and economic participation, and hinders efforts to achieve gender equality. Award winners will share their motivations and successes in developing effective prevention and response interventions, which the World Bank can also incorporate into its development work.
Solid Waste Management
Around the world, waste generation rates are rising.
In 2012, the worlds’ cities 
generated 1.3 billion tonnes of solid waste per year, amounting to a footprint of 1.2 kilograms per person per day. With rapid population growth and urbanization, municipal waste generation is expected to rise to 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025.
