7 reasons for land and property rights to be at the top of the global agenda

This week, more than 1,500 development professionals from around the world are madagascar-farhatgathering at the World Bank’s annual Land and Poverty Conference, discussing the latest research and innovations in policies and good practice on land governance.

Secure property rights and efficient land registration institutions are a cornerstone of any modern economy. They give confidence to individuals and businesses to invest in land, allow private companies to borrow – using land as a collateral – to expand job opportunities, and enable governments to collect property taxes, which are necessary to finance the provision of infrastructure and services to citizens.

Unfortunately, a mere 30% of the global population has legally registered rights to their land and homes.

Spring Meetings, April 12-14

The 2019 Spring Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and SM19_Logo_ENGthe International Monetary Fund will be convened in Washington, D.C. on Friday, April 12, and will close on Sunday, April 14. The Spring Meetings will feature the joint World Bank Group/IMF Development Committee and the IMF International Monetary and Financial Committee plenary sessions, which discuss progress on the work of the institutions. Other events begin on Monday, April 8, such as seminars, regional briefings, press conferences, and many other events focused on the global economy, international development, and the world’s financial markets. ​

Protect Integrity Development Projects Video Still

Compliance and Integrity on February 1st, 2019 in The Hague. The event focused on taking a practical approach and shedding some light on specific issues and questions. The World Bank explained the major do’s and don’ts when working with the Bank and what it means to be under investigation.

The event was well attended and well received by the audience which comprised mainly of the Dutch private sector. The insights and openness of the participants helped the audience understand the issues that arise and more importantly how to proceed in those cases.

Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics 2019 Multilateralism: Past, Present, and Future

The Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE), organized by the archived-image-Bretton-Woods-Conference.jpg World Bank’s Development Economics (DEC) Vice Presidency, is one of the world’s best-known series of conferences for the presentation and discussion of new knowledge on development. The conference aims to promote the exchange of cutting-edge knowledge among researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners.

The next conference will take place on June 17–18, 2019 at World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The theme of the conference will be “Multilateralism: Past, Present, and Future”. The 2019 ABCDE conference will be part of a series of events scheduled to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Bretton Woods conference.

Opportunity knocks: A capital increase for the World Bank

On 1 November I started my new job as Executive Director at the Board of the World koenBank Group. I am incredibly proud to represent the Netherlands and 12 other countries at this important global institution. I cannot think of a mission more important than ending extreme poverty, boosting shared prosperity and achieving the sustainable development goals. I have seen the World Bank achieve results all over the world, most recently when I worked in Mali.
