The primary objective of this Consultancy is to take stock of baseline information for plastic waste leakage into rivers and seas to build a more harmonized regional monitoring, management, and policy framework for plastic waste reduction and enable a more circular economy model for plastics in the South Asia Region. The proposed assignment will document the current status of plastic pollution and its value chain (e.g. hotspots for marine plastic debris, waste composition, material flow of waste plastics), regulatory gap analysis, and identification of relevant stakeholders involved in the life-cycle of plastic and their needs, and possible recycling technology and innovations, etc.

eC2: TECHNICAL CONSULTANT FOR IFC GLOBAL COVID-19 RESPONSE PROGRAM

The program will consist of multiple projects with individual national or provincial governments in South Asia. IFC will provide capacity building support and advice to governments to effectively engage private sector in areas such as enhancing COVID-19 testing services, increasing availability of critical care and other type of hospital beds and isolation facilities to treat COVID-19 patients, etc. The support will be in the form of developing thought documents, recommending private sector engagement models, drafting model contracts and procurement agreements and short-term contracts, developing technical specifications. This is for a Technical consultant for the project. The technical consultant will provide technical and clinical advise and inputs to IFC for the program.

eC2: Digital Economy For South Asia (DE4SA)- Digital Economy Assessments

The World Bank Digital Development Global Practice (DD GP) is engaging with countries across Asia to identify new opportunities for growth and inclusion from the digital economy. These engagements have resulted in most cases from ongoing policy dialogue or investment lending programs and they reflect an interest from these countries to identify the public policies and investments that can promote their national digital economies. At the same time, there are opportunities to be realized through regional programs that could improve connectivity, access to markets, and grow the regional digital economy. In addition, there are also ongoing engagements with countries across Africa in other engagements.

In South Asia, the case for road safety investment is stronger than ever

The global road safety crisis has reached epidemic proportions. Every year, according to in-hyderabad-traffic-nietnagel-flickr.jpgthe World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, some 1.35 million people lose their lives on the road , and millions more sustain serious injuries that often result in permanent disability.

Despite growing awareness, the numbers keep creeping up. The situation is particularly alarming in low and middle-income countries, where economic growth has boosted vehicle ownership and road construction, but road safety action hasn’t kept pace.

As South Asia’s heat rises, living standards decline

This summer, at 42.6°C, July 25 was the hottest day ever in Paris. Halfway across the shutterstock_287040998globe, Delhi recorded its hottest day at 48°C on June 10.

Over the past decades and across the planet, such high temperature extremes have become more prevalent—and will likely get worse as severe heatwaves are expected to be more frequent and last longer. 

South Asia, which covers just about three percent of the world’s land area, is home to a quarter of its population.

And sadly, rising temperatures will hit hard the region and its people.

The jobs challenge is bigger than ever in the poorest countries

Over the next decade, close to 600 million people will be looking for jobs, mostly in the The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP) - Ghanworld’s poorest countries. The South Asia region alone will need to create more than 13 million jobs every year to keep pace with its demographics. In Sub-Saharan Africa, despite a smaller population, the challenge will be even greater—15 million jobs will need to be created each year.

That’s why improving nutrition, especially in the early stages of life, is critical.

The path toward better nutrition includes adequate maternal and child care, access to better sanitation facilities, health services, and naturally, nutritious foods.

But whether an individual consumes—or not—nutritious food is contingent upon a myriad of factors, ranging from the availability of certain foods, how convenient they can be turned into meals, or simply, if they meet consumers’ tastes.

One of the oldest, the Grand Trunk Road from the Mughal era still connects East and West and in the 17th century made Delhi, Kabul and Lahore wealthy cities with impressive civic buildings, monuments, and gardens.
