Continue readingOn March 19-20 the ‘Transforming Transportation’ conference at the World Bank took place,
which was co-hosted by WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities and attended by various officials and organizations from the Netherlands.
Across two days of technical sessions and plenaries, more than 150 speakers joined thousands of participants in Washington, D.C., and online to accelerate innovation and create new partnerships. The conference covered key topics of concern for both climate change and sustainable development, including public transportation, electric mobility, walking and cycling, road safety, and increasing access to jobs, education and health care.
It is 2024 and still one billion people live more than two kilometers away from an all-weather
road, one in six women worldwide don’t job search out of fear of harassment on transit, and road crashes claim over 1 million lives every year, a whopping 92 percent of which are in developing countries.
Digital technologies are transforming economies, creating jobs, and improving lives. They have dramatically changed communications, business, health, education, finance and more.
Yet the digital divide remains stark and is becoming synonymous with a development divide. Billions of people around the world are still offline, and digital advancement has been uneven, exacerbating the gap between the digital haves and the have-nots.

Reforms aim to deliver simplicity and access, supported by CEOs and G20 Expert Group
WASHINGTON, February 28, 2024 – The World Bank Group today announced a major overhaul to its guarantee business that will deliver simplicity, improved access, and faster execution through a new, convenient marketplace. The new reforms are critical to achieving the goal of tripling annual guarantee issuance to $20 billion by 2030.
In an era of overlapping and often intertwined crises, how well countries can prepare for and respond to shocks is crucial. The World Bank Group’s recently launched expanded Crisis Toolkit equips developing countries to do just that, whether they’re faced with natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, or public health emergencies like pandemics. This expanded Crisis Toolkit is designed to fill gaps based on lessons learned from previous crisis response, and substantially expands tools available to countries to protect them in times of crisis and enable faster and more effective recovery from disasters.
