Around the world, nearly 1 in 5 youth ages 15-24 are unemployed, or part of the labor force
but without a job. Among children ages 10-19, 1 in 7 experience a mental disorder. Nearly 6 in 10 ten-year-old children in low- and middle-income countries cannot read and comprehend a simple paragraph. These numbers do not bode well for future innovation and economic growth. By 2050, the people who are under 25 today will compose more than 90 percent of the prime-age workforce.

Our world is very different than our grandparent’s. In 1950, there were about 2.5 billion
people; today, there are more than 7 billion. Overall, people are healthier, wealthier, and more secure.
But this has come at a cost. The stress on our planet has been immense. Human beings have dramatically altered the climate, changed the chemistry of the oceans, and triggered mass extinctions. The impact has been so great as to define an entirely new geological era — the Anthropocene, turbo charged by a “great acceleration” of population, economic growth and natural resource consumption since the 1950s.
Youth Gain Information and Communication Skills to Improve Afghanistan’s Future

- Young men and women interested in information and communication technology (ICT) are being identified and trained to meet the coming needs of the ICT sector in Afghanistan.
- The training is part of the plan under the Afghanistan ICT Sector Development Project to encourage start-ups, innovation, and use of technology.
- The project, implemented by the Ministry of Communication, Information and Technology, supports the overall development of the ICT sector in Afghanistan.
