Women and girls across the African continent yearn for learning and dream of a better future where they can pursue their education, stay healthy, find work, and care for their families at the same time.
Many countries in the region are taking steps towards political and economic inclusion. The latest World Bank’s Women, Business, and the Law report highlights that Sub-Saharan Africa continues to advance reforms to close the legal gender gap, but a broad gap remains between laws on paper and the reality on the ground.
Here are five stories of change that highlight voices of girl champions from the region having ripple effects within their communities and entire countries and economies.
In an era of overlapping and often intertwined crises, how well countries can prepare for and respond to shocks is crucial. The World Bank Group’s recently launched expanded Crisis Toolkit equips developing countries to do just that, whether they’re faced with natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, or public health emergencies like pandemics. This expanded Crisis Toolkit is designed to fill gaps based on lessons learned from previous crisis response, and substantially expands tools available to countries to protect them in times of crisis and enable faster and more effective recovery from disasters.

June 22, 2023—The World Bank Group today announced a suite of new and expanded actions to help countries respond quickly and effectively to an ever-growing onslaught of crises.
At the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact, Ajay Banga announced an expanded toolkit for crisis preparedness, response, and recovery that includes: (1) pausing debt repayments; (2) redirecting financing; (3) linking crisis preparedness and financing; (4);backstopping development projects with private sector support, and (5) building enhanced catastrophe insurance without debt.

Specific activities include: (1) conduct a diagnostic of existing digital government readiness assessment tools respectively developed by the World Bank team and a partner organization; (2) document best practices of digital solutions for COVID-19; update the existing DGRA tool with COVID-19 (and other) disaster preparedness pillar; and develop the tool in online and mobile versions; (3) develop guidelines for pilot studies; assist the Bank team with pilot implementation of testing the toolkit and incorporate lessons-learned in the final deliverable of the tool & report. Specific pilot countries havent been decided at the moment but potential countries include Peru, Uzbekistan and Maldives.

Conclusion: The final section will provide a short summary of the drawbacks and benefits of implementing the TLA toolkit.
Deliverables: The consultant will produce a concise toolkit (guidebook) addressing issues described in the scope of work. The toolkit will be no more than 50 pages in length (aside from any annexes). In addition to the toolkit the toolkit will be developed into an interactive and modular web-based tool that policymakers and development partners can use as a self-guided tutorial.
