The World Bank is launching a competitive procurement process to select consultant services for a new assessment and guidance on smart grid infrastructure. The objective of this activity is three-fold: (i) to take stock of the status of existing smart grid infrastructure in the developing world, (ii) to assess the experience of a sample of WBG client countries with smart grid infrastructure deployment and implementation and identify barriers and emerging lessons, (iii) to develop detailed guidance and recommendations on how the World Bank Group may assist clients in the deployment of smart grid infrastructure (both transmission and distribution) to enhance core outcomes and emerging challenges (e.g., improve overall efficiency and quality of service, integrated variable renewable energy and distributed generation).

It’s seven o’clock in the morning in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Dr. Haba Eveline arrives at guineathe COVID-19 Treatment Center. As soon as she enters, she washes her hands before starting her daily shift. A mother of five, she leads the Risk Management Unit which is now open 24/7.

She is one of the frontline health workers helping her country fight the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. “As a doctor, I am a fighter and I am proud to bring my experience to the response against this pandemic,” she said.

Impact of COVID-19 on households: What do phone surveys tell us?

As COVID-19 (coronavirus) has spread across the world, the World Bank has projected TCard COVID statextreme poverty to increase for the first time since the Asian crisis in 1998, putting at risk the global goal of reducing extreme poverty to 3% of the world’s population by 2030. The duration and scale of impacts are highly uncertain and expected to vary widely within and across countries and over time, which makes it really important to closely monitor the impacts of the crisis on households and firms for designing policy responses. The World Bank’s high-frequency monitoring phone surveys, which are going on in nearly 100 countries, have sought to fill the information gap that traditional in-person surveys are ill-suited to fill during a pandemic. They are a window into how the pandemic is affecting every aspect of the lives of almost every household in the developing world. A similar initiative of Business Pulse Surveys adds to this picture by tracking the pandemic’s impacts on firms in 51 countries.

eC2: Vietnam: Scaling up of Rural Water Private Sector Participation

The RWSS Project scope would entails on-lending the funds to approximately 17 Central and Mekong Delta Provinces. These TORs refer to technical assistance services to promote scaling up private sector participation (PSP) in the scope of the tentative RWSS Project, to be carried out over an 18-month period, which is expected to begin approximately in December 2020. The technical assistance is intended to raise the capacity of central and provincial government officials and other stakeholders to understand better the PSP options for RWS and to design, procure, carry out and monitor rural water supply (RWS) investment sub-projects proposed by the provinces, particularly to increase PSP in terms of both capital investments and technical expertise for management of the rural water schemes. The RWSS Project, both technical assistance and lending, would be intended to have a measurable impact on access to RWS, Sustainability, Climate Resilience, Pro-poor Impact, and PSP of RWS in the participating provinces.
