Senegal – Urban Water and Sanitation Project

The World Bank Board of Directors has approved the Senegal Urban Water and Sanitation Project, worth a total of $70 million and benefiting 590,000 people.

The proposed Project Development Objective (PDO)Senegal-Woman-at-Well-800 is to improve access to water and sanitation services in selected urban areas in a financially sustainable manner. This goal is to be achieved through the following three components:

1. Water Supply – $48.9 million

  • Development of groundwater resources to increase water availability and quality;
  • Rehabilitating water infrastructure in the urban center of Nguekhokh;
  • Increasing access to safe water in selected urban centers;
  • Carrying out technical studies for water supply systems for selected urban centers.

2. Sanitation – $16.8 million

  • Provision of sanitation facilities in the urban center of Joal-Fadiouth;
  • Increasing access to sewerage services in selected urban centers;
  • Support to the Recipient in the areas of: (a) supervision; (b) communication, information and education;
  • Carrying out detailed technical studies for the development of a sanitation system for the Dakar East Zone.

3. Institutional Strengthening and Project Management – $4.3 million

  • Strengthening the Recipient’s capacity in groundwater monitoring and knowledge of groundwater resources;
  • Support to the Recipient in the reforms of the water and sanitation sector;
  • Support to the Recipient in the areas of Project coordination, supervision, financial management.
