The assignment is focused on Orinoquia region with specific focus on Puerto Carreno, La Primavera and Santa Rosalia in Vichada area. The assignment has three objectives:
1) Conduct a review of existing biodiversity information which may include, inter alia:
a. conservation priority maps developed by academics, conservation groups, and Instituto Humboldt;
b. information on the geographic extent of natural habitats and their current ecological condition (with a special focus on grasslands);
c. occurrence of species that a project would need to evaluate against PS6 criteria for Critical Habitat (i.e., species with a status of VU, EN or CR, species with restricted ranges, migratory and congregatory species that regularly utilize the region);
d. an assessment of gaps in IUCN and national conservation status assessments for species occurring in the region;
e. studies of hydrologic function of natural habitats in the regional flood regime.
2) Summarize the current threats to biodiversity in the area (e.g. rate of habitat conversion and its drivers). This summary should include an explanation of government policy and strategic plans for economic development in the region, and the positioning of NGOs with regard to the current development threats in the region.
3) Assess the implications of 1 and 2 above for the application of PS6 to future IFC-financed projects in Colombias Orinoco Basin and provide recommendations for upstream risk management.
Given the current situation with COVID-19, no travel or in-person interactions will be undertaken to complete this assignment. Telephone/videoconference interviews may be conducted with selected stakeholders.
