Recognizing that governments across the globe find themselves at an important inflection point—with overlapping crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other conflicts, sharp economic slowdown, and the effects of climate change that will touch us all—the World Bank recently launched a report on The Future of Government.
It’s an ambitious report that uses this moment as a call to action for governments to proactively reflect and plan on how to move hopefully and carefully into the future. I’m calling your attention to it because there are some important points for infrastructure service delivery and financing models.
Key areas the report addresses affect many issues our readers care about: public procurement and public investment management, innovative financing, transparency and accountability of governments, anticorruption, rule of law, GovTech solutions, reforms of state-owned enterprises, and lots more.
We are boldly asking governments to start reimagining themselves and set out a framework to help.
So, if you’re looking for some visionary reading in these weighty times, I hope you take a look. Here’s a link to a colleague’s blog that introduces more.
